Zhuan Wang Ge (Dominant-Element Patterns): The Five Special Structures

Definition

Zhuan Wang Ge (dominant-element pattern, also "one-element-attains-the-qi") is a special structure: the Day Master rules the month, Resource and Companion are overwhelmingly strong, the whole chart is nearly one element, and there is no Officer/Killing to control it nor Wealth to drain it — so one "goes with the dominant force" rather than supporting/restraining. An outer structure, it is the mirror of the Follow pattern: one extremely strong, the other extremely weak.

The Five Dominant Elements

• Straight-Wood (曲直): a Wood Day Master with the branches forming a Wood direction/trine;
• Blazing-Fire (炎上): a Fire Day Master with Fire dominant;
• Harvest-Earth (稼穑): an Earth Day Master with Earth dominant;
• Reform-Metal (从革): a Metal Day Master with Metal dominant;
• Flowing-Water (润下): a Water Day Master with Water dominant.

Keys to Formation

• The Day Master rules the month and gains a directional combination or trine; Resource/Companion form a solid mass;
• No Officer/Killing to break the dominant qi (even a small rooted Officer/Killing can break it);
• One pure element, a solid wall of force — only then is it a true dominant-element pattern.

Useful God

It favors going with the dominant force — Resource/Companion and Output (draining the excellence) cycles are favorable, while Wealth/Officer cycles (opposing the force) are unfavorable — the reverse of ordinary patterns.

Common Misconception

"A strong body is a dominant-element pattern." It requires strength so total that the chart is one qi "with nothing to control or drain"; even a moderately strong Wealth/Officer breaks it, and it reverts to an ordinary strong-body reading.
