Tou Gan (Transparency): A Hidden Stem Revealed at the Stems

Definition

Tou Gan (transparency) is when one of the hidden human-element stems within an [Earthly Branch](/bazi/glossary/di-zhi) appears as the same element at the [Heavenly Stems](/bazi/glossary/tian-gan), bringing that qi "to the surface." It is the counterpart of [rooting](/bazi/glossary/tong-gen): rooting is a stem anchoring downward (firm within), transparency is a branch surfacing upward (active without) — read together, they reveal whether a placement is real or empty.

Why Transparency Matters

- **Taking the pattern:** when a hidden stem of the month command becomes transparent, it often sets the pattern (e.g. Wu hides Ding; with Ding transparent, a Hurting Officer pattern can be taken). - **Shown vs. hidden:** a transparent qi is overt and readily expressed; one merely hidden in a branch is latent, awaiting its time. - **Spirit effect:** Wealth, Officer, Resource, Output, etc. act plainly when transparent; merely hidden, their action is muted.

Transparency with Rooting

- **Both transparent and rooted:** overt and grounded — the most solid and powerful; - **Transparent but rootless:** overt yet floating, easily toppled ("transparent Wealth with no root"); - **Rooted but not transparent:** real strength not yet shown, awaiting a cycle to draw it out.

Common Misconception

**"Transparent means powerful."** Transparency needs a root to be powerful; transparent-but-rootless is an "empty transparency," showy and hollow.
