Tong Gen (Rooting): A Stem’s Source of Strength in the Branches

Definition

Tong Gen (Rooting) is when a [Heavenly Stem](/bazi/glossary/tian-gan) finds its own element among the hidden stems of an [Earthly Branch](/bazi/glossary/di-zhi) — like a tree taking root in the soil. A rooted stem is strong and can carry Wealth and Officer and withstand control and drainage; a rootless stem floats and is easily toppled. It is the counterpart of "transparency": a transparent stem shows outwardly, a root anchors inwardly.

How to Read Rooting

- Check whether a stem's element appears in the hidden stems (main, middle, residual) of the four branches. For example, Jia Wood is rooted in Yin (hides Jia), Mao (hides Yi), or Chen (residual Yi). - Roots vary in strength: a **main-qi** root (Jia in Yin) is strongest, a **middle-qi** root next, a **residual** (vault) root weakest. - A root at Salary or Blade ([Officer/Emperor stages](/bazi/glossary/shi-er-chang-sheng)) is the most powerful.

Nature and Use

- Judging [strength](/bazi/glossary/qiang-ruo): only a rooted Day Master is read by the strong/weak, support-and-restrain logic; a wholly rootless Day Master may shift into a [Follow pattern](/bazi/glossary/cong-ge). - Whether Wealth, Officer, Resource, etc. are rooted decides whether they can truly function.

Common Misconceptions

**1: Judging strength by counting stems.** A transparent stem with no root floats; rooting is the real basis of strength. **2: Any root means strong.** One must also see whether the root is damaged by clash, combination, or punishment.
