成方之义

The term 成方 refers to the gathering of three consecutive earthly branches that share the same directional position. In the case of 申酉戌三会金局, the branches Shen, You, and Xu all belong to the west, and they follow one another directly in the standard sequence of the twelve branches. Because they occupy a continuous stretch of the branch order and converge on a single direction, they are said to form a directional union, or 方. This is why the combination is classified as one of the three combinations known as 三会, or the three-meeting combinations.

This particular group corresponds to the season of autumn. Among the three branches, You is the middle branch and corresponds to the middle month of autumn, the eighth lunar month. Shen precedes it as the first month of autumn, and Xu follows as the final month of autumn. The group therefore expresses the full span of the western, metallic season, with its qi intensifying toward You and then being gathered inward as the season closes.

与三合之别

The three-meeting combinations and the three-harmony combinations are often mentioned together, but their structural logic differs. The 三合 system assembles three branches through a triangular relationship based on positions around the branch circle. Each 三合 group contains one branch from each of the four cardinal directions, and the three branches are separated by regular intervals. In contrast, the 三会 system takes three adjacent branches from the same side of the circle. The 三会 is thus a gathering of like direction, while the 三合 is a gathering of resonant positions.

The classical analogy is that the 三会 resembles friends walking the same path, whereas the 三合 resembles a husband and wife joined in mutual dependence. The 三会 derives its strength from shared location and continuity; the 三合 derives its strength from patterned affinity across distance. Both can concentrate qi, but the nature of the concentration differs.

四正与四墓

Within 申酉戌三会金局, You holds the position of 四正. The 四正 branches are those at the exact cardinal points: Zi in the north, Wu in the south, Mao in the east, and You in the west. You is the cardinal branch of metal and corresponds to the peak, or 帝旺, stage of metal qi. It is the central axis around which the western combination forms.

Xu holds the position of 四墓. The 四墓 branches are Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. Each is associated with the closing and storage of qi, and each serves as a repository in the 三合 system. Chen is the storage branch of the water combination, Wei of the wood combination, Xu of the fire combination, and Chou of the metal combination. The 三会 groups borrow these same four storage branches, but the element stored in a given branch is not necessarily the element of the 三会 group that uses it.

This produces a distinctive feature in 申酉戌三会金局. Xu is the storage branch of fire in the 三合 system. In the five-phase cycle, fire conquers metal. Therefore, within the western metal combination, the storage branch Xu contains qi that stands in a overcoming relationship to the group’s own element. Among the four 三会 groups, this is the only case in which the storage branch’s stored qi opposes the element of the gathering itself. The other three 三会 groups do not have this internal contradiction of the same kind.

常见误区

A common misunderstanding is to assume that the element stored in a 四墓 branch must match the element of the 三会 group that includes that branch. This assumption works for some groups but fails for the western metal group. Xu is the tomb of fire, not of metal. Because fire overcomes metal, the presence of Xu within 申酉戌三会金局 does not simply reinforce metal qi in the manner that one might expect from a storage branch. It gathers and closes the season, but the qi it stores stands in tension with the group’s own element.

Another error is to treat any two of the three branches as equivalent to the full combination. In standard practice, only the simultaneous presence of all three branches—Shen, You, and Xu—constitutes the complete 三会. When only two of the three appear, the condition is called a half meeting, and its force is weaker than that of the full combination. The half meeting may still show a leaning toward the direction or element, but it does not produce the full concentration of qi.

A further point of confusion concerns the method of checking the combination. The assessment is based on the four branches of the year, month, day, and hour pillars. The three branches of 申酉戌 must all appear among these four branch positions. The physical order of the branches within the chart is also relevant. When the three branches are contiguous or tightly arranged among the pillars, the gathering is more focused and its force is stronger. When they are scattered across distant pillar positions, the connection is looser and the force is correspondingly reduced.

Once the full combination forms, the strength of the three branches is drawn toward the western direction and toward metal. The original qi of each individual branch is significantly subdued, because the union redirects the combined influence of the branches toward the shared direction. This is especially important for Xu in this combination, since its independent role as a fire storage branch is subordinated to the larger western gathering, even though the internal tension remains.

The distinction between 三会 and 三合 should also not be blurred in application. A chart may contain a 三合 structure, a 三会 structure, both, or neither. Their implications are not interchangeable. The 三会 gathers adjacent branches into a regional force, while the 三合 links distant branches through resonance. The classical image of friends on a shared road versus spouses in mutual dependence captures the difference in tone: the 三会 is more external and directional, while the 三合 is more binding and relational.
