Planetary Dignities: Rulership, Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall

The same planet, in different signs, has very different strength and "comfort." Classical astrology measures this with essential dignities — rulership, exaltation, detriment, and fall — gauging how strong or at-ease a planet is in a sign.

The Four Main States

• Rulership: a planet in the sign it rules, as if at home — strongest and most freely expressed. Mars in Aries/Scorpio, Venus in Taurus/Libra.
• Exaltation: a planet "honored" in a particular sign, its energy elevated and well-expressed. Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra.
• Detriment: the sign opposite its rulership — the planet is like a guest abroad, less at ease, needing more effort. Mars in Libra, Venus in Scorpio.
• Fall: the sign opposite its exaltation — the planet's force is suppressed, least effective. Sun in Libra, Saturn in Aries, Mars in Cancer.

How to Use Them

• A dignified planet's personality function tends to flow smoothly — a gift.
• A planet in detriment or fall is not "bad," but more challenging, needing conscious effort — often a source of growth and depth.
• Beyond essential dignity, judge a planet's strength by its house, aspects, and element as well.

A Mindset Note

Dignity describes a planet's "state," not a verdict of good or bad. A planet in fall but well-used beats a dignified one ignored.
