Astrological Aspects Explained: Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine, Opposition

Aspects are the angular relationships two planets form along the zodiac, deciding whether their energies cooperate in harmony or grate in tension. Reading aspects is what brings a static chart to life.

The Five Major Aspects

• Conjunction (0°): two planets merge — energies blend and amplify each other; a boost or a burden depending on which planets.
• Sextile (60°) · soft: opportunity and ease, but you must act to use it.
• Square (90°) · hard: tension and challenge — friction, and the drive to grow.
• Trine (120°) · soft: harmony and talent, energy flows naturally — but ease can breed complacency.
• Opposition (180°) · hard: polarity — about balance, awareness, and projection, often playing out in relationships.

There are also minor aspects, such as the quincunx (150°), an "awkward" tension needing constant adjustment.

Orbs

Aspects need not be exact. Major aspects usually allow about a 6–8 degree orb (conjunctions and oppositions wider). The more exact the angle, the stronger the aspect.

Soft vs Hard

• Soft (trine, sextile): smooth, easy, gifted — but may lack drive.
• Hard (square, opposition, some conjunctions): difficult, tight, frictional — yet the engine of growth and achievement. A chart "all soft aspects" is not necessarily luckier than one with hard aspects — challenge often forges strength.
