The 12 Astrological Houses Explained: The Twelve Areas of Life
Deep Oracle Editorial Team · 2026-06-06 · 1 min read
If planets are the "actors" and signs the "style," then houses are the "stage" — they decide which area of your life a planet's energy plays out in. A natal chart has twelve houses for twelve facets of life.
The Twelve Houses
- First · Self: appearance, character, life approach (begins at the Rising sign).
- Second · Money & values: income, possessions, self-worth.
- Third · Communication: thinking, learning, siblings, neighbors, short trips.
- Fourth · Home: family, roots, parents, inner security.
- Fifth · Creativity & love: romance, children, creativity, play, self-expression.
- Sixth · Work & health: daily work, service, habits, the body.
- Seventh · Partnership: spouse, marriage, collaboration, open rivals.
- Eighth · Transformation: intimacy, shared resources, debt, death-and-rebirth.
- Ninth · Beliefs: philosophy, faith, travel, higher education.
- Tenth · Career: vocation, reputation, status, achievement.
- Eleventh · Community: friendship, groups, hopes, long-term goals.
- Twelfth · The subconscious: seclusion, spirituality, dreams, dissolution of self.
The Three House Types
- Angular (1/4/7/10): strongest and most active, the four chart axes.
- Succedent (2/5/8/11): stable, resource-building.
- Cadent (3/6/9/12): flowing, adjusting, learning and transforming. A planet in an angular house is most prominent in life.
How to Use Them
Which house a planet falls in tells you the life area its energy mainly shows up. With aspects and signs, houses make a reading concrete and dimensional. See your planets' houses with the free natal chart calculator and read more in houses and signs.
