The Grand Cross: Fourfold Tension in a Chart

A Grand Cross (Grand Square) is the most tension-laden aspect pattern: four planets in two 180° oppositions, all squaring each other at 90°, drawing a cross on the chart. It can be seen as two overlapping T-Squares, with four energies pulling at once.

Meaning

A Grand Cross's four planets usually fall across four signs of one modality:

• Cardinal Grand Cross: tension between action and initiative — crisis-driven, forever starting.
• Fixed Grand Cross: tension between will and persistence — stubborn, hard to turn, but with great endurance.
• Mutable Grand Cross: tension between adapting and direction — over-thinking and wavering, but flexible and many-sided.
