Definition

The Direct Officer structure (正官格, Zheng Guan Ge) is established when the month command's main qi, or a transparent hidden stem of the month branch, is the Direct Officer, and the chart is not broken. The month command is the foundation of the house; when the Direct Officer is in place in that foundation and then becomes transparent at a stem, it opens a channel of command — the first gate of formation. For example, a chart born in the Yin month (Yin hides Jia, Bing, Wu) with Bing Fire transparent at a stem forms a preliminary Direct Officer structure — and that transparency is not guesswork but a step-by-step hidden-stem mapping you can verify.

The formation rule: transparency rooted in the month command

The first step is to lock the month command (the branch of the birth month), check whether its hidden stems contain the Direct Officer, and check whether that hidden stem is transparent at the year, month, or hour stem. Position does not matter, but the transparent stem must form the "Direct Officer" relation to the Day Master — the stem that controls the Day Master and is of *opposite* polarity.

For a Jia Wood (yang) Day Master, the Direct Officer is Xin Metal (yin). In the Yin month, Yin hides Jia (main), Bing (middle), Wu (residual) — none of which is Xin, so a Jia Day Master can never transmit a Direct Officer through the Yin month. In the Shen month, Shen hides Geng, Ren, Wu — Geng is yang metal, the Seven Killings, not the Direct Officer. In the You month, You hides Xin alone — and Xin is precisely Jia's Direct Officer. So for a Jia Day Master in the You month, once Xin is transparent (at any stem), the structure preliminarily forms. The hard constraint: the transparent stem must be a human-element actually held by the month branch. If the month is You but only Geng (not Xin) shows at the stems, it does not form a month-command Direct Officer structure, because Geng is not transparent *from* You.

Configuration: usable god, supporting god, favorable and unfavorable spirits

Once the Direct Officer structure stands, the chart's quality depends on the system built around the Direct Officer as the usable god (用神) — here the Direct Officer itself. Success rests on whether the Officer is unwounded and whether it has supporting force.

• Unfavorable spirits: the Hurting Officer and the Seven Killings. The Hurting Officer directly controls the Direct Officer ("Hurting Officer seeing the Officer"); the Seven Killings mixes with the Direct Officer to muddy the structure. These are the highest-priority destroyers.
• Supporting god (相神): the spirit that restrains the unfavorable spirit and protects the usable god. Against "Hurting Officer seeing the Officer," a Direct or Indirect Resource serves as supporting god, draining the Hurting Officer's harm and protecting the Officer; against Officer-Killing mixture, an Eating God or Hurting Officer that combines away the Killing and leaves the Officer clarifies the structure.
• Favorable spirits (喜神): Wealth generates the Officer, deepening its root (favorable when the Officer is weak); the Resource both restrains the Hurting Officer and transforms the Officer to generate the body, giving the Day Master the capacity to bear the Officer.

This mirrors the *Zi Ping Zhen Quan*, chapter "On the Direct Officer" (《子平真诠·论正官》), which stresses that the Direct Officer most fears mixture with the Hurting Officer and the Seven Killings, that rescue lies wholly in the Resource and in Output combining away the Killing, and that Wealth and Resource accompanying each other without obstruction is the mark of a Direct Officer structure brought to its vessel.

Breaking and rescue

Breakage has two strict paths, each with one corresponding rescue:

1. Hurting Officer seeing the Officer — a Hurting Officer transparent or in the branches, with no Resource to restrain it and protect the Officer, breaks the structure. *Rescue:* a strong transparent Direct or Indirect Resource drains the Hurting Officer; the Resource must itself be unbroken (not ruined by Wealth). 2. Officer-Killing mixture — both Direct Officer and Seven Killings present and unyielding, with no Eating God or Hurting Officer to combine away the Killing, leaves the structure impure. *Rescue:* an Output that thoroughly combines away the Killing, leaving the Direct Officer clean.

Worked examples with transparency check and scoring

Forming: Day Master Jia Wood, born in the You month (Xin), with Xin transparent at the hour; Ji-earth Direct Wealth at the year stem and Gui-water Direct Resource at the month. Four pillars: Ji-Si · Gui-You · Jia-Zi · Xin-Wei. The You month hides Xin; the hour Xin matches and is Jia's Direct Officer — formation confirmed. The hour Xin is the Officer (usable god), the year Ji is Direct Wealth (favorable, generates the Officer), the month Gui is Direct Resource (favorable, transforms the Officer to generate the body). No Hurting Officer or Killing mixture; the usable god is fed by Wealth and guarded by Resource — the high "Wealth-and-Resource accompanying" structure the *Zi Ping Zhen Quan* describes. A transparent score reflects this: Officer root (You is Xin's salary) 1.0; mixture 0; Resource protection 0.9; Wealth-generating-Officer 0.8 → weighted ≈ 0.94. A very strong structure, pointing to attained nobility.

Breaking (Hurting Officer seeing the Officer): Day Master Jia in the You month, Xin Direct Officer transparent at the year, Ding Fire Hurting Officer transparent at the month. Four pillars: Ding-Mao · Ji-You · Jia-Zi · Xin-Wei. The Ding Hurting Officer sees the Officer with no Resource to restrain the Ding; the structure breaks and the Officer's score falls to zero. Wealth (Ji) is present but the rescue fails for lack of a Resource.

Classical mapping

Other schools (e.g. the *San Ming Tong Hui*, the *Shen Feng Tong Kao*) differ in how strictly they treat Officer-Killing mixture, but this does not change the baseline above.
