Qi Sha Ge Formation, Breaks, and Real Case Study
Definition
The Seven-Killings structure (七杀格, Qi Sha Ge — also called Indirect Officer / 偏官格) forms when the main qi of the month command is a Heavenly Stem that controls the Day Master *and* shares its polarity, or when that stem is transparent at the stems. The Seven Killings is, in essence, a blade aimed straight at the self: well restrained and channeled, it becomes power in hand; unrestrained, it wounds. Success is judged not by the Killing's strength but by the completeness of the restraint-and-transformation system and the balance of forces — the first lock behind the Seven-Killings door.
Classical Foundation
The framework comes from the *Zi Ping Zhen Quan*, chapter "On the Indirect Officer" (《子平真诠·论偏官》). Its gist: the Seven Killings, warring across seven positions, is violent by nature — but configured with an Eating God to control it or a Resource to transform it, the killing turns to authority. Every later discussion — "the Killing harnessed by the Eating God" or "Killing and Resource generating each other" — descends from this restraint-and-transformation logic. Derivative patterns such as Yang-Blade harnessing the Killing, or Wealth breaking an Indirect Resource, are all variants of the same mechanism.
The Three Roads to Formation
- Eating God controls the Killing. A strong Seven Killings with a transparent, rooted Eating God controlling it directly — the high road, "the Killing harnessed by the Eating God." Those who form it turn a sense of crisis into decisive action and thrive in turbulent, competitive settings.
- Resource transforms the Killing. A Resource (Direct or Indirect) sits close to the Killing, drains its force into itself, then passes it to the Day Master. Not restraint but channeling — "Killing and Resource generating each other." Those who form it convert pressure into strategy, often in advisory, strategic, or scholarly fields. The Resource must be rooted and not broken by Wealth.
- Yang Blade harnesses the Killing. A strong Day Master carries its own Yang Blade (the imperial-flourishing position of a yang stem) and meets the Killing head-on, body to blade. Forms in military, police, surgical, and competitive fields. A strong body opens new ground; a weak body sets blade and killing at war and breaks — a hard boundary not to be blurred.
Worked Example
Yan Xishan: Gui-Wei · Xin-You · Yi-You · Ding-Hai. The You month command transmits the Xin Killing to the stem — the Seven-Killings structure stands, with layered Xin metal and very heavy killing qi. The hour-stem Ding Fire (Eating God), with a faint root in Wei, forms the core "Eating God controls the Killing" path; Ding is a candle flame against a sea of You metal, its strength not ample — the very tension of the structure. The Day-branch You Killing neighbors the Hai Resource, a local "Killing and Resource generating each other" that bleeds off part of the killing, leaving the Yi Wood Day Master a path of life under heavy pressure. The structure favors southeastern wood-fire luck to root the Ding; should it enter water territory, water floods the fire and the Hai Indirect Resource robs the Ding Eating God of its work, and the structure wavers.
Common Misconceptions
- Reading "Killing" as calamity. Seven Killings is not disaster; well restrained, its sense of authority and breakthrough far exceeds the Direct Officer. Find the Eating God, Resource, or Yang Blade first.
- Assuming Blade-harnesses-Killing always forms. It requires a *genuinely* strong body with an imperial-flourishing branch behind it. A body strong only in appearance, rootless and floating, sets blade and killing warring when the Killing presses close — injury or upheaval, not nobility.
- Assuming any Resource transforms the Killing. Transformation needs a working path — Killing and Resource adjacent or in unbroken qi, the Resource itself rooted and not cut by Wealth. A rootless Resource beside the Killing is a paper shield.
