Shi Shen Ge: Wealth from Food God, Overcoming Owl Seizure
Definition
The Eating God structure (食神格, Shi Shen Ge) forms when the month command's main qi is the Eating God — the spirit the Day Master generates, of the *same* polarity (e.g. a Jia Wood Day Master meeting Bing Fire) — or when that spirit is transparent at the stems. The Eating God is gentle, steady output: appetite for life, craft, nourishment, and the patient conversion of the Day Master's vitality into tangible fruit. Milder than the Hurting Officer, it forms most readily by generating Wealth, and breaks most characteristically when an Indirect Resource seizes it.
Classical Foundation
The *Zi Ping Zhen Quan*, chapter "On the Eating God" (《子平真诠·论食神》), names the high road as Eating God generating Wealth (食神生财) and the classic breakage as the Owl God seizing the Eating God (枭神夺食) — the Indirect Resource (枭神) controlling and cutting off the Eating God of the same polarity. The text treats the Eating God as a benign spirit best left to flow into Wealth, and warns that an Indirect Resource transparent beside it strangles its generative power.
Forming and Breaking
- Eating God generating Wealth (食神生财). The Eating God drains the Day Master's essence into the Wealth star — stable earning through skill, intelligence, and craft. The Day Master must be rooted, or excessive draining yields "a poor man in a rich house."
- Breaking — the Owl God seizes the Eating God (枭神夺食). While the Eating God works, an Indirect Resource (the Owl) appears transparent and, controlling the same-polarity Eating God, cuts it off — sudden reversals, accumulated gains turning to difficulty.
- Rescue — Wealth controls the Owl to protect the Eating God. When Eating God, Owl, and (often) Seven Killings appear together, an added Wealth star — especially Indirect Wealth — restores the chain: Wealth controls the Owl → the Owl is restrained → the Eating God survives → it continues its work. In life this reads as an outside resource or a practical decision arriving to pull a losing position back.
Worked Examples
Male: Bing-Yin · Gui-Si · Jia-Zi · Wu-Chen. The Jia Wood Day Master born in the Si month has the Bing Fire Eating God in command, with Wu earth Wealth — an Eating-God-generating-Wealth tendency.
Female: Jia-Wu · Jia-Xu · Bing-Yin · Xin-Mao. The Bing Fire Day Master born in the Xu month carries the Wu earth Eating God (Xu's main qi) — the Eating God structure formed from the tomb month.
Male: Wu-Wu · Jia-Yin · Ren-Zi · Geng-Zi. The Ren Water Day Master born in the Yin month has the Jia Wood Eating God in command, but the Geng Metal Indirect Resource threatens it — the textbook "Owl seizing the Eating God" pressure, where a Wealth star would be the rescue.
Common Misconceptions
- Treating Eating God and Hurting Officer as interchangeable. Both are Output, but the Eating God is steadier and more nourishing; the Hurting Officer is sharper and more disruptive.
- Assuming any Resource helps. A *Direct* Resource supports the body, but an *Indirect* Resource (the Owl) of matching polarity can strangle the Eating God — the difference is decisive.
- Forgetting the body's root. Eating-God-generating-Wealth only forms when the Day Master is rooted enough to bear the draining.
