The Twelve Life Stages (Shi Er Chang Sheng): A Stem’s Strength Cycle
Deep Oracle Editorial Team · 2026-06-06 · 3 min read
Definition
The Twelve Life Stages describe the twelve energy phases a Heavenly Stem passes through as it "lodges" in the twelve Earthly Branches — a cycle from conception and growth to peak and decline. It is the core tool for judging a stem's strength in a given branch and whether it is rooted.
The Twelve Stages
In order: Long-Life (长生), Bath (沐浴), Cap-and-Sash (冠带), Officer (临官), Emperor-Flourishing (帝旺), Decline (衰), Sickness (病), Death (死), Tomb (墓), Cutoff (绝), Conception (胎), Nourishment (养). Of these:
- Officer (临官) is the "Salary" (see Lu Shen), where a stem is most grounded and strong;
- Emperor-Flourishing (帝旺) is the peak — a yang stem here forms the Yang Blade;
- Tomb (墓) is the vault, Cutoff (绝) the weakest point.
Yang Forward, Yin Reverse
Yang stems run forward, yin stems reverse: Jia Wood's Long-Life is at Hai, its Emperor at Mao; Yi Wood's Long-Life is at Wu, its Emperor at Yin. Fire and Earth share stages (Bing/Wu Long-Life at Yin, Ding/Ji at You, in the fire-earth-shared system this site uses).
Nature and Use
- Long-Life, Officer, and Emperor are strong positions — the stem is rooted and can carry Wealth and Officer;
- Death, Tomb, and Cutoff are weak — the stem floats and needs support.
- The stages judge stem strength and also derive spirit-stars (e.g. Peach Blossom takes the trine's Bath position).
Common Misconception
"Emperor-Flourishing is always best." Peak invites reversal — a yang stem at Emperor becomes the Yang Blade, and over-strength then needs restraint; true strength is read from the whole-chart strength.
