The Four Useful-God Selection Schools — Strength, Climate, Disease-Cure, Single-Element
Useful-god selection is the most contested step in BaZi. This article documents how the four schools choose, when each applies best, and how to handle conflicts — the actual decision flow inside Deep Oracle's useful-god engine.
Why useful-god selection is the hardest step
Chart calculation is mechanical. Identifying the day master is mechanical. Mapping the ten gods is mechanical — code can execute all of these end-to-end. The step that actually requires craft is useful-god (用神) selection: choosing which of the five elements this specific chart most needs supported. Get the useful god wrong and every downstream judgment — luck-pillar timing, annual scoring, compatibility analysis — drifts off-axis.
The difficulty is that "most needs" is defined differently across schools. The classical literature gives multiple internally-consistent procedures, and no single school can claim to have monopolized the truth. Deep Oracle's in-depth BaZi reading outputs the strength-balancing school's verdict by default while logging the other three for cross-reference. This article documents the actual decision logic.
School 1: Strength balancing (the most-used framework)
The strength-balancing school's core proposition: support a weak day master, drain a strong one. Whether the day master holds the season, has roots in any branch, is generated by Resource stars, supported by Friends — these collectively determine strength, which determines useful-god direction.
- Weak day master: useful gods are Resource (生我, generates me) and Friend (同我, same as me). Example: Bing-fire born in Zi (Rat) month — water cold, fire weak — useful god is Wood (Resource generates fire) plus Fire (Friend reinforces day master). - Strong day master: useful gods are Output (我生), Wealth (我克), Officer (克我) — drain or counterbalance to bring the day master back to balance. - Balanced (中和): theoretically no isolated useful god needed; the priority is preserving existing harmonic structures and avoiding luck pillars that disrupt them.
The strength-balancing school's strength is scriptability — it can be largely automated. Deep Oracle's free BaZi chart calculator computes the strength-balancing initial verdict before the deep reading step even fires.
The weakness: this school handles extreme charts poorly (Following Pattern, Transformation Pattern), and it sidesteps the actual sensory impact of season-temperature. A Bing-fire day master in summer is theoretically strong and "needs draining" — but if the chart has zero water for climate adjustment, the entire chart is parched and scorching, and the strength school's earth-output recommendation misses the actual problem.
School 2: Climate adjustment (the 《穷通宝典》 proposition)
The climate-adjustment school traces to 《栏江网》 (later re-edited by Yu Chuntai as 《穷通宝典》). Core proposition: the season's hot/cold/dry/wet condition determines the chart's felt experience — climate-adjust first, then balance strength.
The selection logic rotates around the day-master-vs-month-branch seasonal relationship: - Winter-born (Hai/Zi/Chou months): cold and frozen — regardless of strength, Bing-fire is needed for warmth. - Summer-born (Si/Wu/Wei months): scorching — regardless of strength, Ren or Gui water is needed for cooling. - Spring-born (Yin/Mao/Chen months): wood is bursting — Metal is needed to control runaway wood, OR Fire to release wood's congested energy. - Autumn-born (Shen/You/Xu months): metal is severe — Fire is needed to forge metal into useful form, OR Water to channel metal's energy.
The climate school's strength: immediately actionable for daily life — what color clothes, what direction to live, what season's foods to eat all flow directly from the useful-element. This is the school primarily referenced in the in-depth BaZi reading's daily-life adjustment section.
Weakness: for charts that are naturally balanced and have no obvious "true" useful god, climate adjustment can feel arbitrary.
School 3: Disease-and-cure (Shen Xiaozhan's 《子平真诠》 path)
The disease-and-cure school's proposition: find the chart's most acute conflict (the disease), and the useful god is the cure for that specific disease.
Examples: - Wealth Excess With Weak Day Master: disease is "too much wealth," cure is Friend stars to support the day master and seize back wealth. - Officer-Killings Mixed: disease is "the mixture," cure is removing one (留官去杀 or vice versa). - Resource Heavy With Strong Day Master: disease is "resource excess," cure is Wealth to break Resource. - Output Excess Draining Day Master: disease is "over-drainage," cure is Resource to control Output.
This school's advantage is precision: when a chart has an obvious pathology, the disease-and-cure approach often points directly to the most critical character, where the strength school might give a generic direction. Weakness: it requires the diagnostic eye, not something pure algorithm can fully simulate. Deep Oracle's in-depth reading uses disease-and-cure logic in its higher-order interpretive paragraphs — identifying specific structural conflicts then prescribing — but that step is LLM reasoning, not deterministic script.
School 4: Single-element dominance (going with the flow, not against)
When one element is overwhelmingly dominant in a chart (four pillars all wood, or branches forming a wood-trine plus transparent wood stems), the strength school would suggest Metal to control the excess Wood — but practice has shown this "against the flow" approach often invites severe outcomes. The single-element school's response: go with the flow, not against — the useful god is actually the dominant element itself.
Common dominance patterns: - Curving Straight Pattern (Wood dominant): use Wood to amplify, Water to generate Wood, avoid Metal which would conflict the dominant force. - Blazing Upward Pattern (Fire dominant): use Fire and Wood, avoid Water. - Flourishing Earth Pattern (Earth dominant): use Earth and Fire, avoid Wood. - Transformative Metal Pattern (Metal dominant): use Metal and Earth, avoid Fire. - Flowing Down Pattern (Water dominant): use Water and Metal, avoid Earth.
The entry threshold for the single-element diagnosis is high — the dominant element must truly dominate (overwhelming proportion, no significant counterweight). Deep Oracle's pattern engine uses proportional thresholds: when one element exceeds 50% of total weighted strength with no meaningful counter-control, the chart enters the single-element evaluation track.
When the four schools disagree
In real charts, the four schools frequently give non-identical useful-god recommendations. Deep Oracle's handling principles:
1. Don't force-synthesize: if strength balancing says use Metal and climate says use Water, we surface both verdicts and explain that the divergence comes from different methodological starting points — not a contradiction to resolve. 2. Distribute recommendations by use case: daily-life adjustments (color, direction, food) lean climate-adjustment; major decisions (business launch, partnership formation) lean strength + disease-and-cure; extreme charts default to the single-element diagnosis. 3. Mark high-confidence consensus: charts where all four schools converge on the same useful god are rare, but when they happen, the in-depth reading flags them as "four-school consensus useful god" — with significantly higher confidence than any single-school verdict.
The cost of selecting the wrong useful god
A misidentified useful god systematically biases every downstream judgment: luck-pillar good/bad reverses, annual recommendations miss, compatibility analysis miscategorizes. This is why we publish the methodology — readers have a right to know which school's logic produced any given verdict, and the right to challenge it or get a second opinion from another practitioner.
