The rising sign is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It depends on the time, date and latitude of birth and changes roughly every two hours. Enter your details to compute it; the more exact the time, the more reliable the result.
How it is computed
From the birth instant and the birthplace's coordinates, an astronomical ephemeris gives the apparent ecliptic positions of the Sun, Moon and eight planets; sidereal time, latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic give the Ascendant and Midheaven. Positions are accurate to arcminutes; the Ascendant moves about 1° every 4 minutes, so its accuracy is bounded by the birth time. Houses are whole-sign: the rising sign is the first house.
Birth time and time zone
Enter the clock time at the birthplace. It is converted to UTC with the birthplace's historical time-zone rules, including past daylight-saving periods (mainland China 1986–1991, Taiwan 1979, and so on). If the birth time is approximate, read the rising sign as a range; the page flags results near a boundary.
FAQ
- Can I get a rising sign without a birth time?
- No. All twelve signs rise in the course of a day, so without a time there is no answer. Check a birth certificate, hospital record or family; if you only know a rough window ("early morning", "evening"), enter its start and end and see whether both fall in the same sign.
- Does the birthplace matter?
- Yes. Longitude sets the relation between local and universal time; latitude sets how fast signs rise. The same instant in Taipei and Harbin can give different rising signs. Choose the city you were actually born in.
