Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio on the island of Corsica to a minor noble family of Italian origin and later moved to mainland France. Commissioned as an artillery officer in 1785, he rose to prominence during the French Revolution by winning the siege of Toulon and crushing royalist insurgents in Paris. He then led highly successful campaigns against Austria and its Italian allies, becoming a national hero of the French Republic. In 1804 he crowned himself Emperor of the French, ruling under his regnal name Napoleon I. During the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars he seized power through campaigns across Europe and North Africa, while also implementing sweeping legal and administrative reforms, most notably the Napoleonic Code, which profoundly influenced later legal systems. After his first abdication in 1814 and a brief return during the Hundred Days in 1815, he was defeated at Waterloo, exiled to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, and died there.
