Zheng Yin Ge: Formation, Wealth-Destroying Seal, and Rescue
Definition
The Direct Resource structure (正印格, Zheng Yin Ge) is the pattern set by a month command whose main qi is the Direct Resource — the spirit that generates the Day Master, of opposite polarity (e.g. a Jia Wood Day Master meeting Gui Water). It can form when the Direct Resource rules the month even without transparency, and shows more plainly when transparent. Its core character is excellence, scholarly nobility, absorption, and shelter — study, documents, the blessing of elders. Success turns not on the Resource's presence but on the company it keeps — with Wealth and Officer/Killing the two decisive forces.
Classical Foundation
The structure is treated systematically in the *Zi Ping Zhen Quan*, chapter "On the Resource" (《子平真诠·论印绶》). Taking the pattern from the month command, it states plainly that the Resource structure likes Officer/Killing to generate and support it, and Companions to guard it, but most fears Wealth coming to control it directly — for Wealth can ruin the Resource, and a wounded Resource shakes the structure's foundation. The chapter dissects the success and failure of different transparent combinations, forming the enduring frame for later discussion of the Resource pattern.
Forming and Breaking
- Forming — Officer/Killing generates the Resource (官印相生). The mark of gathered nobility — rank, authority, stable social standing. Requires Officer/Killing unmixed and unclashed, with the Resource not closely controlled by Wealth.
- Breaking — Wealth ruins the Resource (财坏印). When Direct or Indirect Wealth closely controls the Resource, or Wealth forms a party to attack it, the structure breaks. With the Resource as the root and Wealth cutting it, an unrescued chart tends toward forsaking principle for profit, losing study or office for the sake of money, health pressure, or thin affinity with the mother. Severity depends on the relative strength of Wealth and Resource and whether rescue exists.
- Rescue — Companions control Wealth to protect the Resource (比劫制财护印). When Wealth comes to ruin the Resource and a rooted Companion or Robber Wealth is transparent, it restrains the Wealth so the Wealth cannot wound the Resource — restoring the Resource's protective function. Such a chart passes through trials but ultimately keeps its foundation through peers, collaboration, and its own effort.
Worked Example
Take a chart with a Jia Wood Day Master born in the Zi month, where the Gui water inside Zi is the Direct Resource in command — a Direct Resource structure.
- Forming: with a Xin-metal Direct Officer transparent at the year and Gui-water Direct Resource at the month, a Xin → Gui → Jia "Officer generates Resource" chain forms. With the Officer rooted, not wounded by a Ding Fire, and the Resource unspoiled by Wu/Ji Wealth, the structure is clean — strong study, a steady official path, lifelong support from elders.
- Breaking: if instead a Wu-earth Indirect Wealth is transparent at the month, closely combining with Gui (the Wu-Gui combination, controlling the Gui water) while strong earth roots in the branches feed the Wealth, then Wealth floods and controls the Resource, and the structure breaks — favoring money over learning, document or contract disputes in mid-life, thin maternal affinity, or metabolic strain.
- Rescue: on that breaking base, if a Jia-wood Companion or Yi-wood Robber Wealth is transparent and rooted, it restrains the Wu-earth Wealth so the Wealth no longer wounds the Resource — the structure is saved. Such a person may break off study early under financial pressure, yet, helped by friends and their own effort, later completes a degree or gains a stable place in culture or education.
Common Misconceptions
- Assuming any Resource is auspicious. A Resource with no Officer/Killing to generate it and no Companion to guard it, meeting Wealth's direct control, is a structure in name only — fortune turns on whether the structure circulates unwounded, not on the Resource's label.
- Equating "Wealth ruins Resource" with "a poor fate." It is a structural-pressure tendency, not poverty itself; some such natives turn to business and gain wealth — but often with luck-dependence, contract risk, and health concerns. The structure speaks to nobility and stability, not a single wealth metric.
- Ignoring the distance between Resource and Day Master. An untransparent month Resource with a transparent Wealth is controlled more gently — still a breakage, only milder; a transparent Resource directly capped by Wealth is the heaviest breakage.
