Mourning Gate (丧门): A BaZi Spirit-Star

Definition

Sang Men (the Mourning Gate) is an inauspicious [spirit-star](/bazi/glossary/shen-sha) signifying funerary and grievous matters, used mostly for the **annual year**, cueing care for elders' health, avoiding too much involvement in funerals, and minding low mood that year. This site derives it from the **year branch**.

Derivation

Sang Men takes the branch two positions ahead of the year branch (a Zi year gives Sang Men at Yin). For annual readings, the year's branch is compared against the natal year branch. This site computes it from the [Earthly Branches](/bazi/glossary/di-zhi) by the engine's rule.

Meaning and Use

- Relates to mourning, grief, and emotional lows, often paired with [Diao Ke](/bazi/glossary/diao-ke) and [Pi Ma](/bazi/glossary/pi-ma) as "Mourning Gate and Condolence Guest." - Mostly annual: in a Sang Men year, mind elders' wellbeing, regulate emotion, and handle funerary matters carefully. - A natal Sang Men need not manifest as ill — read triggering and resolution; no need to panic.

Common Misconception

**"A Sang Men year means a death."** It is a "mind this" cue, more about emotion and care for elders than a fated calamity.
