Hua Qi Ge (Transformation Pattern): When a Stem Combination Transforms

Definition

Hua Qi Ge (transformation pattern) is a special structure: the Day Master combines with an adjacent Heavenly Stem in one of the "five stem-combinations," and the transformed element (the transformation god) rules the month command and is strong — so the Day Master "transforms from self into other," and the whole chart follows the transformation god's qi.

The Five Stem-Combinations

• Jia–Ji → Earth, Yi–Geng → Metal, Bing–Xin → Water, Ding–Ren → Wood, Wu–Gui → Fire. A transformation pattern requires the Day Master to take part in one of these, with the transformation god ruling the month.

True vs. False Transformation

• True transformation: the transformation god rules the month, its qi forms a solid mass across the pillars, with no clash, control, or breaking combination — true, and fortune is promising.
• False transformation: the transformation god is out of season, or an unfavorable element clashes/breaks the combination — untrue, with turbulence and a fate that rises and falls as cycles trigger or break the transformation. The crux: whether the transformation god rules and is strong, and whether the combination is broken by a clash.

Useful God

Its useful-god logic differs from the ordinary support-and-restrain: generating-and-supporting the transformation god is favorable, while controlling/draining it, or stirring the Day Master back to itself (contending or jealous combinations, or a clash) is unfavorable.

Common Misconceptions

1: Any stem-combination is a transformation pattern. It forms only if the transformation god rules, is strong, and is unbroken; otherwise it is merely "combined but untransformed." 2: Transformation patterns are always noble. Only a true transformation is; a false one is turbulent — distinguish true from false.
