Widowed Star (寡宿): A BaZi Spirit-Star

Definition

Gua Su (the Widowed Star) is an inauspicious BaZi [spirit-star](/bazi/glossary/shen-sha), symbolizing solitude, coolness, and aloneness. Derived from the **year branch**, it pairs with [Gu Chen](/bazi/glossary/gu-chen) as "Solitary-and-Widowed," and traditionally women are said to mind Gua Su more.

Derivation

Gua Su takes the branch "behind" the year branch's directional trio: Yin-Mao-Chen sees Chou; Si-Wu-Wei sees Chen; Shen-You-Xu sees Wei; Hai-Zi-Chou sees Xu. This site computes it from the [Earthly Branches](/bazi/glossary/di-zhi) (one behind, mirroring Gu Chen's one ahead).

Meaning and Use

- Gua Su signifies a reserved, aloof nature; in excess, emotional distance, living alone, or a cool later life. - It also favors quiet self-possession — religion, art, research, and independent callings. - With Gu Chen present and unresolved, the solitary image is stronger; a warm chart with a Noble eases it.

Common Misconception

**"Gua Su means an unhappy marriage."** It is a tendency-color; marital fortune still rests on the [spouse palace](/bazi/glossary/zheng-cai), spouse star, and whole chart.
