Tong Sheng: Cantonese Term for the Traditional Almanac

通胜 is the Cantonese-speaking world’s name for the almanac elsewhere called 通书. In content, 通书,黄历, and 农民历 belong to the same class of Chinese almanac; the names vary by region and publisher. They are traditional annual reference books that combine calendrical data with day-selection guidance. The term 通胜 is used because in Cantonese the word for book, 书, is homophonous with the word for losing, and is replaced by the auspicious word for winning, 胜. The material inside, however, remains the same type of day-by-day scheme found in classical almanacs.

通胜、通书、黄历、农民历这几个名字,

These four names refer to the same genre of publication. 通书 is the older general name, meaning a comprehensive or all-purpose book. 黄历 refers to the almanac’s historical association with the imperial calendar, though in modern use it simply means the traditional almanac. 农民历 is the name commonly used in Taiwan and some Chinese-speaking communities for a version oriented toward agriculture, festivals, and practical daily use. 通胜 is the Cantonese avoidance form of 通书. The publisher’s choice of title does not mark a difference in underlying method. A book sold as 通胜 in Hong Kong and one sold as 农民历 in Taiwan may use the same day-selection systems, although the editorial weighting can differ. The name is therefore a matter of region and convention, not a separate school of technique.

通胜里并行的几套系统,

Day selection in a 通胜 is not based on one unified system. Several systems run in parallel on the same page. The main ones are the 宜忌栏, the 建除十二神, the 值神, the 二十八宿, and the 冲煞. The 宜忌栏 is the familiar list of suitable and unsuitable activities for the day. The 建除十二神 is a cycle of twelve designations beginning with 建 and ending with 闭, each carrying its own traditional character. The 值神 is the deity or spirit assigned to the day, drawn from a rotating series. The 二十八宿 are the twenty-eight lunar mansions, each with its own indications. The 冲煞 states the animal branch clashed by the day and the direction to avoid. Beyond these, the almanac includes finer taboos such as 彭祖百忌,三煞, and 岁破. 彭祖百忌 gives day-specific prohibitions attributed to Pengzu, such as avoiding certain activities on days with particular stems or branches. 三煞 and 岁破 are directional and annual afflictions that restrict construction, movement, or ground-breaking. These layers are printed together, but they do not form a single decision procedure.

为什么两本通胜的结论会不同,

The systems in a 通胜 are independent. They do not judge one another. When one system marks a day as suitable for a purpose and another marks it as unsuitable, there is no higher rule inside the almanac that resolves the conflict. Each publisher assigns its own weighting to the different systems and selects what appears in the 宜忌 column accordingly. One editor may give more weight to the 建除十二神, another to the 二十八宿, and another to the 值神 or to the 冲煞. The result is that the same Gregorian date can be printed as auspicious in one almanac and inauspicious in another. This is not a printing error. It is the expected consequence of running several parallel systems through different editorial filters. The disagreement between almanacs is normal, not exceptional. A reader comparing two books should not assume that one is wrong and the other right; they are applying different emphasis to the same raw material.

通胜上没有的那一层,

The 宜忌栏 uses a fixed vocabulary. Its entries are the names of traditional activities: marriage, moving house, opening a business, burial, ground-breaking, travelling, seeking medical treatment, and the like. These items are generic. They do not change according to the person using the almanac. The day’s 宜忌 is part of the calendrical system; it is computed from the day’s stem and branch, or from the solar-term position, and is the same for everyone on that day. There is no personal layer in the printed almanac. A 通胜 does not ask for the user’s birth data, the direction of the house, the age of the person, or the specific location beyond the general 冲煞 direction. That missing layer is the personal or site-specific layer handled by other methods, such as 八字-based selection, 奇门,六壬, or geomancy. The almanac is therefore a general calendar, not a personal consultation. It can say that a day is traditionally marked as suitable for marriage, but it cannot say whether that day is suitable for a particular person’s marriage.

看通胜时实际可用的次序,

Because the almanac’s 宜忌 is general and its internal systems are multiple, the practical order of use should not begin with the almanac’s verdict. The correct sequence is to first set the feasible window. That means determining the range of dates that are possible for the matter at hand: when the parties are available, when the venue is open, when the legal or practical deadline falls. Only after that window is fixed should one look at the almanac. Within the feasible dates, pick the days that are marked as acceptable or at least not strongly prohibited under the systems one chooses to follow. If the matter is a ritual act, such as an ancestral rite or a wedding ceremony, the almanac’s ritual indications may carry more weight. If the matter is a decision, such as signing a contract or announcing a plan, the almanac’s indications are less directly applicable. The final step is to separate the ritual from the decision. A family may choose a day from the almanac for the ceremony while keeping the legal and practical decision on its own schedule. This order prevents the almanac from overriding real constraints and keeps the printed 宜忌 in its proper place as one input among several.

通胜之外还要自己确认的事,

Even when a day is chosen from the 通胜, some things remain outside the book’s scope. The user must still confirm the actual date and time in the relevant calendar. The 通胜 prints the lunar date and the 干支 for the day, but the user must verify the Gregorian date against the official or civil calendar if the event must be registered, booked, or legally recorded. The user must also confirm the location’s requirements: availability, permit, access, and any site-specific rule that no almanac can know. If the event involves other people, their practical constraints and their own views must be checked separately. If the matter concerns health, law, finance, or safety, the almanac has no authority; those decisions belong to the relevant professionals and institutions. The 通胜 can supply a traditional reading of the day, but it cannot confirm that the chosen day works logistically, legally, or medically. For that reason the almanac is best treated as a cultural and customary reference, not as the final arbiter of a decision. Its function is to help the user select among already possible dates, not to create possibilities or to remove real-world constraints.
