Funeral Date Selection: Almanac Terms and Practice

In Chinese almanac and selection practice, the term 出殡 refers to the funeral procession in which the coffin is carried out for burial or cremation. Although 出殡 is a common event in funeral arrangements, it does not appear as an independent item in the traditional fixed vocabulary used in the suitability and taboo columns of the standard almanac. The relevant entries concerning funeral matters are instead distributed across several adjacent activities, each with its own timing rules. For that reason, anyone trying to select a date for 出殡 must first understand how the older categories relate to the modern sequence of a funeral.

旧目录里对应的是哪几条

The traditional almanac uses a fixed list of terms in its suitability and taboo sections. Among the entries related to mourning and burial are 入殓,移柩,成服,除服,启攒, and 安葬. The list does not contain 出殡 as a separate term. In old-style phrasing, what modern people call 出殡 is closest to 移柩 or is covered by the surrounding funeral procedures, but it is not named as such. Because the word 出殡 is absent from the standard list, one cannot simply look under an entry labeled 出殡 in a traditional almanac and find a direct recommendation. Instead, the relevant timing judgments are recorded under 移柩,安葬, and related headings. 入殓 concerns placing the body into the coffin. 成服 and 除服 concern the formal putting on and later removal of mourning garments. 启攒 concerns opening an old grave and removing the coffin or bones, which belongs to reburial or secondary burial rather than to an initial funeral. 安葬 concerns the burial itself. These are the fixed categories within which funeral-related date selection is traditionally expressed.

移柩、安葬与出殡的先后

Among the traditional terms, 移柩 refers to moving the coffin out of the place where it has been kept and preparing for the funeral procession. This occurs before 出殡 proper, and it is not the same as burial. In the traditional sequence, 移柩 and 安葬 are not performed on the same day, and the almanac treats them as separate items requiring separate date selection. 移柩 is therefore the earlier step: the coffin is moved from the temporary resting place, often a funeral home or the home of the deceased, to be made ready for the procession. 安葬 is the later step of placing the coffin into the ground or tomb. Between these two, the procession itself takes place, but because the old vocabulary does not name that procession as 出殡, the date of moving the coffin is the closest traditional anchor for what is now commonly called the funeral day. The separation between 移柩 and 安葬 also means that a day judged suitable for moving the coffin is not automatically treated as the same day selected for burial.

几个环节为什么分开择日

The several funeral-related entries are separated in date selection because they refer to different physical actions and different ritual moments. 入殓 is the placing of the body into the coffin, which usually occurs soon after death and under conditions governed more immediately by practical arrangements than by a wide range of choices. 移柩 is the removal of the coffin from where it has rested, an action with its own timing considerations. 成服 and 除服 mark the beginning and end of formal mourning dress and are tied to the mourning schedule rather than to the burial itself. 启攒, as noted, belongs to opening an existing grave and removing remains, and is therefore relevant to exhumation, reburial, or secondary burial, not to a first burial. 安葬 is the final placement of the coffin or remains. Because these actions are distinct, the traditional system treats their timing separately. A single funeral may involve several of these steps across different days, but the almanac does not collapse them into one general funeral day. The absence of a single 出殡 entry reinforces the need to look at the specific action being timed.

时间上最先受限的一段

In most places, the interval from death to the funeral procession is only three to seven days. This means the range of dates available for the activities surrounding 出殡 is already very narrow. Unlike weddings or other planned events, a funeral cannot be postponed for a long time to wait for a more favorable date. The short window imposes a hard limit on how much selection can actually be done. Within that period, there may be only a few days on which the necessary steps can be arranged. The narrow range also affects how the traditional categories are applied: instead of choosing freely among many dates, the family or the person handling arrangements must first identify which days are possible at all, and only then consider whether those days are marked as suitable or unsuitable under the relevant traditional headings. The constrained interval is the first limiting factor in practical date selection for 出殡.

这一类事项上的实际次序

In practice, the order of decision-making is to first determine the feasible interval, and only then to choose among the days that are actually available. The hard constraints include the scheduling of the funeral home or crematorium, the travel schedules of relatives who must attend, and the completion of any legal procedures required after death. These constraints come before traditional date selection. Once the feasible days are known, the traditional categories such as 移柩 or 安葬 can be consulted for those days only. If a day is impossible because of a funeral home schedule or because relatives cannot arrive, it is not a candidate regardless of what the almanac says. The practical sequence is therefore: establish the possible window, filter it by institutional and family constraints, and then examine the remaining days under the relevant traditional headings. This is different from selecting an abstractly favorable day first and then trying to force all arrangements to fit it.

择日之外由法定手续决定的部分

Some parts of the funeral timeline are determined by legal or administrative procedures rather than by date selection. The issuance of a death certificate, the registration of the death, and any permits required for burial or cremation are governed by law and by the procedures of the relevant authorities. These steps impose their own timing and cannot be altered by traditional selection. The funeral home or crematorium also operates according to its own booking system, which may limit available times regardless of what a family prefers. Travel arrangements for relatives, particularly those coming from other cities or countries, are another external constraint. In this framework, traditional date selection applies only to the ritual actions that remain flexible after legal and logistical requirements have been met. The legal and administrative parts of the process stand outside the almanac categories and are not subject to the same kind of suitability judgment.
