Difference Between Asking a Specific Question and Fortune Telling

问事和算命 are often mentioned together in Chinese-metaphysics contexts, but they are not the same procedure. The distinction matters because the two practices take different inputs, produce different kinds of results, and are subject to different standards of repeatability. In ordinary usage, 问事 means asking about one concrete matter and seeking a statement on it, with one inquiry directed at one issue. 算命, in most contexts, means arranging a chart based on the time of birth and interpreting a person’s overall structure.

两个词各自指的做法

问事 refers to asking about a specific matter. The question is concrete: whether a plan can proceed, where a lost object is, how a particular negotiation will end, or what is happening with a certain relationship at this moment. The procedure is one question, one answer. The answer is meant to speak to that situation only, not to describe the whole course of a life.

算命, by contrast, usually starts from the birth time. The birth year, month, day, and hour are converted into a set of 干支 characters and arranged into a chart. From that chart, the practitioner reads a broad structural description: the person’s tendencies, strong and weak areas, recurring patterns, and the general shape of different life domains. This is not one question and one answer. It is an overall reading built from fixed data.

The two practices therefore differ at the level of what is being requested. 问事 is situational and narrow. 算命 is structural and general. A person may use 问事 when facing an immediate decision, and 算命 when trying to understand a longer pattern.

输入不同带来的一切差别

The most important difference lies in the input.

For 八字, the input is the birth time: year, month, day, and hour. These are fixed facts. Once the birth data are recorded, the resulting chart is the same every time. The 干支 positions do not change on a second calculation. If a person was born on a certain date and hour, that date and hour remain the same tomorrow and next year. The chart is therefore unique and repeatable in a strict sense.

For 问事, the input is a sample taken at the present moment. The method of sampling may vary: casting coins, drawing a card, noting a time, hearing a phrase, or observing a sign. But whatever the method, the input is not a fixed biographical fact. It is a momentary reading. If the same matter is asked about again, the sample is taken again, and the result is normally different. The second sample belongs to a different moment, with different conditions.

Everything else follows from this. Because 八字 is based on fixed birth data, the chart can be checked and rechecked. The arithmetic of the 干支 arrangement can be verified step by step. Because 问事 is based on a momentary sample, it cannot be rechecked in the same way. The first result is the result for that asking. A later asking is a new event, not a confirmation of the old one.

可否重复这一项

This is the most substantial difference between the two.

八字 can be repeatedly checked. The birth time is entered, the chart is arranged, and the arrangement can be examined again against the same data. If a mistake is suspected, the calculation can be redone. If a different practitioner arranges the chart, the result should be the same whenever the birth data are the same. There is no inherent reason why a correct 八字 chart would change from one calculation to another.

问事 cannot be repeated in that manner. The practice is tied to the moment of asking. For the same matter, a second asking produces a second sample. That second sample is not a check on the first; it is a separate event. If someone asks the same question twice and receives two different answers, there is no fixed chart to which one can return to settle which answer is correct. The first asking had its moment, and the second asking had another.

This is not a minor procedural detail. It is the core distinction. 八字 provides a stable object that can be revisited. 问事 provides a time-bound response that cannot be re-obtained in identical form. When a person treats 问事 as if it should be repeatable, they are applying the standard of 八字 to a practice that does not operate by that standard.

问同一件事得到相反说法时

Sometimes a person asks the same matter through both methods, or through 问事 twice, and receives opposite directions. One result says proceed; the other says stop. One chart reading suggests a favorable period; the divination answer warns against the plan.

The correct response is not to choose one answer over the other and declare it true. Nor is it to treat the contradiction as proof that both methods are meaningless. The better move is to return to the question itself.

In most such cases, the problem is that the question was not specific enough. A vague question can produce apparently conflicting answers because it does not pin down what is actually being asked. If the matter is a business move, the relevant question may need to distinguish between timing, partner, location, funding, and one’s own role. If the matter is a relationship, the question may need to distinguish between whether to continue, how to communicate, what to expect, and what to avoid. When the question becomes concrete, the apparent conflict often dissolves, because the two answers were not answering the same question in the first place.

The instruction here is practical: do not force a choice between two contradictory statements. Instead, refine the inquiry. Ask what exactly is being decided, under what conditions, within what time frame. The contradiction is usually located in the question, not in the methods.

两者能不能一起用

They can be used together, but not as checks on each other.

The two practices operate at different time scales. 八字 describes a broad structure across years and decades. 问事 addresses a present situation, often with a short horizon. A person may use 八字 to understand their general pattern, and 问事 to decide a particular step within that pattern. This is a legitimate combined use.

What is not recommended is using one system to verify the other. If a 问事 answer is compared against a 八字 reading and the two are expected to align point by point, the comparison is misplaced. They are not measuring the same layer of time. An overall chart may show a difficult year, while a specific divination answer says that a particular meeting can go ahead. These are not necessarily inconsistent, because the meeting is one event inside a larger period. The chart gives the backdrop; the divination gives the foreground. One cannot be used to prove the other wrong in a simple way.

The practical advice is to keep their functions separate. Use 八字 for structure and long-term pattern. Use 问事 for a concrete present decision. When both are used, let each answer its own kind of question. Do not demand that a momentary answer confirm a structural reading, or that a structural reading predict a momentary outcome.

This site does not provide lot-drawing or divination on behalf of anyone. What this site does is 八字排盘. The birth data are arranged into a chart, and every step of that arrangement can be reviewed and checked. That is the standard appropriate to 八字. It is not the standard appropriate to 问事, and the site does not offer 问事. When a reader needs a fixed, verifiable chart based on birth time, this site provides that. When a reader needs a situational answer to a present question, that belongs to a different procedure and is not provided here.
