BaZi consultation is a form of Chinese metaphysical inquiry based on the eight characters derived from a person’s birth time: year, month, day, and hour, each expressed as one heavenly stem and one earthly branch. The term 八字咨询 refers to the process of asking focused questions about life events and receiving an interpretation grounded in the natal chart. It is distinct from divination methods that rely on a momentary sample, such as casting hexagrams or drawing lots, because the BaZi chart itself is fixed for a given person and does not change when the question changes.

Traditional practice treats question-based consultation as one matter per inquiry. A single lot drawn or a single hexagram cast corresponds to one concrete question, and the inquiry ends when that question has been addressed. Mixing several unrelated matters into one question has traditionally been regarded as making the result difficult to interpret. BaZi is different in this respect. The input is the birth time, and for one person there is only one chart across a lifetime; no matter when it is cast or arranged, the eight characters remain the same. By contrast, the input for a hexagram is a sample taken at the present moment. If the same person casts hexagrams for different matters on the same day, the resulting boards will differ. This distinction matters because BaZi consultation may address a life situation as a whole, while one-matter-one-question logic belongs more naturally to momentary divination.

Normal chart arrangement requires only three types of information: birth year, month, day, and hour together with the birth location, and sex. These are the inputs needed to convert the birth time into the eight characters. Identity card numbers, residential addresses, and household financial circumstances have no bearing on the calculation of the four pillars. If such information is requested before the chart is arranged, that request goes beyond what is necessary. The chart itself is determined solely by the birth time and place; whether the person is present does not change it. What can be supplemented in a face-to-face meeting are matters outside the chart, such as tone of voice, demeanor, and current circumstances. These do not alter the eight characters; they only affect which aspects of the chart the interpretation emphasizes.

A usable interpretive statement must answer at least three things: what range of events is being judged, which relationships in the chart support that judgment, and under what conditions the conclusion does not hold. If any one of these three is missing, the statement cannot be checked. This requirement applies whether the question concerns career, relationships, health, or another area of life.

When writing out a question for BaZi consultation, the question should be specific enough to permit verification. A question such as whether changing jobs this year is suitable fits the method better than asking whether tomorrow’s interview will succeed. The effective unit of judgment in BaZi is usually measured in years or months, not in days. A well-formed question therefore names the time scale and the area of life involved. It should also allow the consultant to state which chart relationships are being used. For example, if the question concerns a job change, the answer should indicate whether the reading draws on the Day Master, the month branch, the luck cycle, or the annual stem and branch, and it should state what would make the conclusion invalid, such as a different reading if the birth time is off by one hour. Without that structure, the answer may sound definitive while remaining impossible to test.

BaZi consultation is an interpretive practice, not a guarantee of outcomes. The chart does not change, but the reading may vary according to the consultant’s judgment and the scope of the question. Certain situations are best treated as warnings to end the conversation. If the consultation opens with predictions of disaster, if the consultant demands additional payment before being willing to finish what was already being said, or if the consultant asks for information beyond what is needed to arrange the chart, these three patterns are each sufficient reason to stop.
