Differences Among the Five Kuigang Days: Nayin Wuxing and Traits

The five days grouped under the term 魁罡 are distinguished not only by their shared reputation but by substantial differences in their internal structure. These differences concern the five elements, the void branches, the hidden stems and Ten Gods of the day branch, and the direction of the branch clash. Such distinctions mean that the five 魁罡 days cannot be treated as a single undifferentiated category. The following sections outline these structural differences.

纳音各不相同

The five 魁罡 days each belong to a different nayin category. 壬辰 is classified as 长流水, or Long Flowing Water. 庚辰 is 白蜡金, or White Wax Metal. 庚戌 is 钗钏金, or Hairpin and Bracelet Metal. 戊戌 is 平地木, or Flat Ground Wood. 壬戌 is 大海水, or Great Sea Water.

Although 庚辰 and 庚戌 are both forms of Metal, they are not the same nayin Metal. 庚辰 is 白蜡金, while 庚戌 is 钗钏金. Likewise, 壬辰 and 壬戌 are both Water, but 壬辰 is 长流水 and 壬戌 is 大海水. The only Wood among the five is 戊戌, classified as 平地木. No Fire nayin appears among the five 魁罡 days, and Earth nayin is also absent from this list. The nayin level therefore provides a first clear basis for separating the five days from one another.

旬空各不相同

The five 魁罡 days also differ in their void branches, known as 旬空. 壬辰 has void branches 午 and 未. 庚辰 has void branches 申 and 酉. 庚戌 has void branches 寅 and 卯. 戊戌 has void branches 辰 and 巳. 壬戌 has void branches 子 and 丑.

No two of the five days share the same pair of void branches. This means that the branch resources that are considered empty or inactive differ from one 魁罡 day to another. On 壬辰, the branches 午 and 未 are void; on 庚辰，申 and 酉 are void; on 庚戌，寅 and 卯 are void; on 戊戌，辰 and 巳 are void; and on 壬戌，子 and 丑 are void. Because the void condition affects the interpretation of branches appearing elsewhere in a chart, the same branch may be meaningful in connection with one 魁罡 day and void in connection with another.

日支藏干与十神的对照

The five 魁罡 days differ in the hidden stems contained in the day branch and in the Ten Gods those hidden stems represent relative to the day stem.

For 壬辰, the day branch 辰 contains 戊土 as the Seven Killings, 乙木 as the Hurting Officer, and 癸水 as the Rob Wealth.

For 庚辰, the day branch 辰 contains 戊土 as the Indirect Seal, 乙木 as the Direct Wealth, and 癸水 as the Hurting Officer.

For 庚戌, the day branch 戌 contains 戊土 as the Indirect Seal, 辛金 as the Rob Wealth, and 丁火 as the Direct Officer.

For 戊戌, the day branch 戌 contains 戊土 as the Friend, 辛金 as the Hurting Officer, and 丁火 as the Direct Seal.

For 壬戌, the day branch 戌 contains 戊土 as the Seven Killings, 辛金 as the Direct Seal, and 丁火 as the Direct Wealth.

This comparison shows that the same hidden stem can function as a different Ten God depending on the day stem. For example, 戊土 in the branch 辰 is the Seven Killings for 壬辰 but the Indirect Seal for 庚辰. Likewise, 癸水 is the Rob Wealth for 壬辰 but the Hurting Officer for 庚辰. Within the 戌 branch, 戊土 is the Indirect Seal for 庚戌, the Friend for 戊戌, and the Seven Killings for 壬戌. 辛金 is the Rob Wealth for 庚戌, the Hurting Officer for 戊戌, and the Direct Seal for 壬戌. 丁火 is the Direct Officer for 庚戌, the Direct Seal for 戊戌, and the Direct Wealth for 壬戌.

同为魁罡而论断不能相同

The five 魁罡 days share a common label, but the structural material behind that label is not uniform. Their day branches are limited to two types: 辰 and 戌. These two branches stand in a relationship of direct clash, known as 辰戌冲. For the days whose branch is 辰, namely 壬辰 and 庚辰, the clashing branch is 戌. For the days whose branch is 戌, namely 庚戌，戊戌, and 壬戌, the clashing branch is 辰.

This branch clash is only one point of difference. As shown above, the nayin classifications differ across all five days, the void branches differ across all five days, and the hidden stems and their Ten God assignments differ according to the day stem and branch combination. A 庚辰 day and a 庚戌 day share the same day stem but differ in branch, void branches, nayin, and the hidden stem structure. A 壬辰 day and a 壬戌 day likewise share the day stem but differ in nearly every other listed structural feature. Even the two days with a 辰 branch, 壬辰 and 庚辰, differ in nayin, void branches, and the Ten God meanings of the hidden stems in 辰.

The term 魁罡 is a category based on the day pillar only. It is identified by the day pillar stem and branch together. When the same stem and branch combination appears in the year pillar, month pillar, or hour pillar, it is not treated as 魁罡 according to this definition. Thus 魁罡 is specifically a day-pillar designation, and the five days covered by it are not interchangeable. Their differences in nayin, void branches, hidden stems, Ten Gods, and branch clash direction mean that a reading must take account of the specific day involved rather than relying on the general label alone.
