Order of Analysis: From Chart Calculation to Interpretation

论命次序 refers to the order in which a bazi reading should be conducted: first the deterministic calculation of the chart, then the interpretive judgment built on it. The distinction matters because much of what circulates as命理 discussion mixes these two stages, treating uncertain readings as if they were part of the fixed chart. The entry below sets out the sequence and the reasons for keeping it.

The first stage in论命 is排盘: producing the four pillars from the year, month, day, and hour of birth. This stage is deterministic calculation. It does not depend on interpretive school, on the reader’s preference, or on the purpose of the consultation. The four pillars are derived from the birth data by applying calendrical rules. Once the input is fixed and the calculation rules are fixed, the output is fixed. There is no room in this stage for saying that one reading of the chart is more favorable than another, because no reading has yet taken place.
On this site, the排盘 is computed according to the solar terms and true solar time. Both are part of the deterministic layer. The solar terms determine the month pillar boundary, while true solar time corrects the clock time of birth to the local solar position used for the hour pillar. These calculations can be checked step by step. They do not involve the later question of what a chart means. The site therefore separates the computed chart from the written interpretation that follows it. The chart belongs to the calculation layer; the interpretation belongs to the judgment layer.

The five-phase distribution is a tally of the elements present in the stems and branches. None of these requires an interpretive stance to produce. They can be wrong only if the calculation is wrong, not because one school disagrees with another.
Once interpretation begins, the situation changes. Different traditions may weigh the same element differently, may treat the same combination differently, or may emphasize different parts of the chart. That is expected. The point of the sequence is not to deny such differences, but to prevent them from contaminating the part of the process that should be stable.

When the order is reversed, a person begins with a conclusion and then searches for supporting evidence in the chart. This is always possible to do, because a bazi chart contains many interacting symbols. Given a desired conclusion, one can select the elements that appear to support it and set aside those that do not. The result looks coherent, but it has no reliable foundation.
The correct order is to finish the calculable part first, then interpret on top of it. If the chart is wrong, the interpretation built on it is irrelevant. A conclusion that does not even match the排盘 result cannot be rescued by later reasoning. For that reason, if the four pillars do not correspond to the input data under the stated rules, there is no need to continue reading the interpretation. The rest of the text may be internally consistent, but it is attached to the wrong object.
The same applies when the calculation uses an incorrect solar-term boundary or an uncorrected clock time. These are not minor details. A birth near a month boundary can fall into a different month pillar depending on the solar-term calculation. A birth recorded by standard time can fall into a different hour pillar when true solar time is applied. If either error occurs, the day master, month command, ten gods, and element distribution may all shift. The interpretation is then about a chart that was not actually derived from the person’s birth data under the stated method.

The two most common errors in the calculation stage are the solar-term boundary and true solar time. Both occur before any interpretation begins.
The solar-term boundary is the point at which the month pillar changes. The month pillar is not based on the lunar calendar’s first day, nor on the Gregorian month. It changes at the solar terms, such as 立春 for the first month. A birth just before or just after a solar term can fall into different month pillars. If the boundary is approximated by date alone, without the exact solar-term time for the year and location, the month pillar may be wrong.
True solar time is the adjustment from the clock time used in daily life to the local apparent solar time. Standard time zones flatten large geographic areas into one clock time. Two births recorded at the same clock time in different longitudes within a time zone do not occur at the same solar time. The hour pillar depends on the twelve double-hour branches, and a difference near a branch boundary can move the hour pillar. A calculation that ignores longitude and the equation of time can therefore assign the wrong hour pillar.
Both errors are detectable by checking the stated input and the stated method. They are not hidden uncertainties. When a result does not survive this check, the later interpretation loses its object.

Interpretive disagreement is a separate matter from calculation error. Many parts of命理 have long-standing divisions. Different sources may treat the same combination, clash, or transformation differently. They may assign different weights to the month command, to the day master’s strength, or to the presence of certain gods. They may use different conventions for hidden stems or for the treatment of void branches. These divisions are not a sign that the entire field is arbitrary, but they do mean that a single answer presented without acknowledging the existence of disagreement is not equivalent to a certain answer.
A response that says “this chart means X” without noting that another tradition would read the same chart differently is presenting one interpretive position as if it were a calculated result. That is a category error. The calculation can be certain; the interpretation is a judgment made within a tradition. The presence of分歧 does not mean that no statement can be made, but it does mean that the statement should be placed in the interpretive layer rather than the calculative layer.
The order therefore serves a second function. It shows which parts of a reading can be checked and which parts are matters of school. When the two are separated, the reader can evaluate the chart first, confirm its accuracy, and then assess the interpretation with the understanding that it is one reading among several. When they are mixed, the reader cannot tell where the fixed part ends and the judgment begins.
