Any tool that converts a clock time into a BaZi chart must therefore decide whether that 23:30 reading belongs to the day that is ending or the day that is beginning. Testing with 23:00 exactly, or with 23:30, exposes this decision immediately. If the tool returns the day pillar of the following date, it is using one convention; if it keeps the day pillar of the current date, it is using another.

There are two common treatments of the 子时 boundary. The first is the late 子时 treatment, also called 晚子时. Under this convention, a person born after 23:00 has the day pillar advanced to the following day, while the hour pillar is still computed from the actual clock time of birth. In other words, the date component of the chart jumps forward, but the hour branch remains 子. The second is the early 子时 treatment, also called 早子时. Under this convention, the day pillar does not advance at 23:00. The birth remains on the current calendar day until midnight, and only after 00:00 does the day pillar change. Both conventions have a basis in traditional practice. The difference is not whether one is universally correct and the other wrong; it is whether the tool states which convention it is applying.
