Doubao Bazi: Pillars Generated, Not Looked Up

Doubao is a general-purpose conversational model. It generates text token by token, and it does not come with an attached calendrical lookup table. When it produces a BaZi chart, the four pillars are written out as language, not retrieved from a reference system. This matters whenever a birth time is missing, because the hour pillar is not something a language model can reliably reconstruct from memory or from conversational habit.

This test requires only one input: a Gregorian year, month, and day, with no clock time supplied. The purpose is to see how the model handles the hour pillar when the hour is absent.
The hour pillar cannot be derived from the date alone. In BaZi calculation, the day is divided into twelve two-hour intervals, and each interval corresponds to one of the twelve earthly branches. The stem of the hour pillar is then derived from the day stem together with that branch. Without a clock time, there is no way to know which branch applies. A model that nevertheless produces an hour pillar is filling a gap that the input did not support.
The correct behavior in this situation is to leave the hour pillar blank and state that it is missing. The hour pillar is derived from the clock time; when no clock time is given, there is no basis for deriving it. Any hour pillar supplied under those conditions is an invention, even if it is phrased as a default or an assumption.

When the clock time is unknown, the correct output is a three-pillar chart, not a four-pillar chart. The year, month, and day pillars can still be calculated from the date, but the hour pillar must be marked as absent. The page should present the three available pillars and note that the hour pillar is not shown because the time was not provided.
The site engine follows this rule. It does not output an hour pillar when the clock time is unknown. It arranges the chart with three pillars and marks the hour position as missing. It does not fill the hour pillar with any default time, whether noon, midnight, or any other hour.
This distinction is not a stylistic preference. A three-pillar chart is a different object from a four-pillar chart with an assumed hour. The first is honest about what the input supports; the second imports information that was never given.

The difference between filling in an hour pillar and marking it as missing is not simply a matter of two characters. When the hour pillar is absent, the earthly branch of the hour is also absent. That branch would normally carry hidden stems and Ten Gods. In a full four-pillar chart, the hour branch opens into its hidden stems, and those hidden stems produce their own Ten God relationships to the day stem. When the hour pillar is missing, all of those items are missing together.
A three-pillar chart therefore does not merely have two fewer characters on the right side. It also lacks the hidden stems that would come from the hour branch, and it lacks the Ten Gods that would be assigned through those hidden stems. If a model supplies an hour pillar anyway, it is not just adding a label. It is adding a branch, the hidden stems of that branch, and the Ten Gods derived from them, all without the input that would justify those additions.
This is why the correct treatment is to leave the hour position structurally empty. It is not enough to say the time is unknown and then quietly proceed with a guessed hour. The missing hour must remain visible as a missing part of the chart.

If the hour pillar is handled incorrectly, the remaining layers need not be tested. The hour pillar is not an isolated field at the end of the chart. It feeds into the rest of the reading. The hour stem and branch participate in combinations, clashes, punishments, and harms with the other pillars. They also produce Ten God relationships. If the hour pillar is wrong, then every annotation that starts from the hour pillar is wrong as well.
For that reason, when the model invents an hour pillar, the test can stop at this layer. The correct next step is not to continue evaluating other features of the chart. The correct next step is to go back to the input, confirm that the birth time is genuinely unknown, and then either obtain the time or explicitly accept a three-pillar reading.
The model may sometimes continue and produce a full analysis from the invented hour pillar. That analysis may look internally consistent, but its starting point was unsupported. In a reference context, that is not a minor defect. It is a failure at the level of chart construction.

A conversational model tends to complete a pattern rather than leave it open. When it sees year, month, and day, it often continues to the hour pillar because the four-pillar format is what it has learned to produce. The model is not consulting a calendar. It is producing the next plausible token. In many cases, it will generate an hour pillar and accompany it with a phrase such as “generally take noon” or “default to Zi hour.” That phrase itself is a recognizable error marker.
The problem is not that the model chooses the wrong hour. The problem is that it chooses an hour at all. A model that says “assuming noon” has already crossed the boundary from reporting to fabricating. The hour pillar is not a variable that can be defaulted. It is a fact about the birth time, and if the birth time was not given, the fact is absent.
This is why the test is useful. It separates systems that treat BaZi as a calculation from systems that treat BaZi as fluent text. A calculation engine can stop when an input is missing. A text generator tends not to stop, because stopping leaves an incomplete pattern. Yet in BaZi, the incomplete pattern is sometimes the correct answer.
The three-pillar chart remains readable in part. The relationships among the year, month, and day pillars can still be examined. Combinations, clashes, punishments, harms, and the Ten Gods of those three pillars remain available. What must not be done is to extend the chart into the hour position without a clock time. That extension changes the chart from a partial record into a fabricated one.
