What Date Selection Actually Evaluates

Date selection in BaZi practice rests on a specific technical question: how does the stem-branch structure of a candidate date interact with the stem-branch structure of the person’s own chart? A day in the traditional calendar is expressed as a pair of characters — one heavenly stem and one earthly branch, such as 丁未 (Ding-Wei). A person’s 四柱 (Si Zhu, Four Pillars) is likewise built from four such pairs, one for the year, month, day, and hour of birth. When an engine evaluates a proposed date, it compares the candidate day’s stem and branch against each of these four pillars and checks for the standard relations: 生 (Sheng, generating),克 (Ke, controlling),刑 (Xing, punishment), and 冲 (Chong, clash).

This comparison is mechanical in nature. Given a date and a birth chart, the engine can compute the day’s stem and branch, locate its position relative to the solar terms, and run the same relation-checking routines it uses elsewhere in the system. The result is a profile of how that date sits against the person’s chart, not a narrative about what will happen on that day.

The engine can also determine the 节气 (Jie Qi, solar terms) position for any day. This matters because the solar terms mark boundaries in the calendrical system, and the assignment of month pillars depends on them. A date that falls just before or just after a term boundary such as 立春 (Li Chun, start of spring) may carry a different month branch, which in turn changes the relation-checking result. The engine’s ability to calculate the exact term entry time is what allows the date evaluation to rest on the correct month context.

One consequence of this design is that the computation is deterministic. The same birth data and the same candidate date will always produce the same set of stem-branch relations. There is no probabilistic layer and no external interpretation applied at the computation stage. The engine does not decide whether a date is “good” in any absolute sense; it only reports which relations are present and how strong or weak the interactions are relative to the chart structure.

This is a narrower claim than what the phrase “择日” sometimes implies in popular usage. The engine does not scan for days that guarantee a favorable outcome. It evaluates days against a fixed, rule-based framework and returns a set of suggestions. The suggestions are derived from the relation profile, but they remain suggestions.

How the Engine Computes the Relevant Data

The date-selection feature draws on the same underlying calculation layer as the rest of the platform. The engine can compute the 四柱 for any birth date and time, including the hidden stems within each branch, the 十神 (Shi Shen, Ten Gods) assigned to each stem, and the 纳音 (Na Yin) element for each pillar. It also computes the 十二长生 (Shi Er Chang Sheng, twelve-stage life cycle) positions and the standard 神煞 (Shen Sha, symbolic stars) associated with the chart.

For a candidate date, the engine applies the same machinery. It derives the day pillar, checks the month context against the solar term table, and computes the relations between that day’s stem and branch and the person’s four pillars. The output is a structured list of interactions — for example, a day branch that clashes with the year branch, or a day stem that generates the day master. The engine does not turn these into life advice. It leaves the interpretive weight to the reader or to a separate BaZi reading.

The system also handles the conversion between the Gregorian calendar and the Chinese 万年历 (Wan Nian Li, perpetual calendar), including the exact times of solar term entries and 真太阳时 (Zhen Tai Yang Shi, true solar time) correction. These conversions are prerequisites for date evaluation because a date is only meaningful in BaZi terms once its stem-branch assignment and its month context are fixed. Without the solar term boundary, a date near the start of a month could be assigned the wrong month pillar. Without true solar time correction, a birth time near a two-hour boundary could shift the hour pillar. The engine resolves these before running any relation checks.

It is also worth stating what the engine does not do. It does not compute 称骨 (Chenggu, bone-weight fortune), does not recommend baby names, does not predict examination outcomes, and does not produce any deterministic event prediction. These exclusions are by design. The date-selection output is confined to the relation structure between a date and a chart. It does not extend into statements about whether a specific event will succeed or fail.

What a Selected Date Does and Does Not Mean

A date returned by the engine as more compatible with a given chart is a preference, not a prediction. The preference is based on the absence of severe clashes and the presence of supportive or neutral relations between the day and the chart. If a candidate day’s branch clashes with the person’s year branch, the engine will flag that clash. If another day’s stem generates the day master, the engine will note that relation. From these observations, the system can rank dates or mark certain ones as more or less suitable relative to the person’s BaZi chart.

What the engine cannot do is guarantee that an event held on a selected date will turn out well. The relation profile is one input among many in any real-world situation. A day with no clashes does not remove the influence of the person’s current luck pillar, the yearly cycle, or the practical circumstances of the event itself. The engine’s output is a statement about the date-chart interaction, not a statement about outcomes.

This distinction matters for how the feature is used. If someone is choosing between several possible dates for a signing, a move, or an opening, the engine can show which dates carry fewer points of friction against their chart and which carry more. That is a useful filter. But it is not a control mechanism. A favorable date profile does not override the strength or weakness of the day master, nor does it neutralize a difficult year pillar influence. It is one layer of information.

The same applies to days that the engine flags as challenging. A clash between a candidate day and the chart’s year pillar is a real structural observation. It means the day’s branch and the year’s branch stand in a 冲 (Chong) relation, which in BaZi analysis is treated as instability. But the engine does not translate that into “do not travel” or “do not sign.” It only reports the relation. The user decides what weight to give it.

How to Read the Results in Practice

When the engine returns a date evaluation, the useful way to read it is as a structured comparison. A user with a full chart reading can see which pillars are most sensitive. A person whose day pillar is already under pressure from a current 流年 (Liu Nian, annual cycle) may want to avoid adding a date whose branch clashes with the same pillar. A person whose chart is relatively stable may find that most dates carry only mild interactions. The output gives the raw material for that judgment.

The month context is part of this reading. A date that looks neutral in isolation may sit inside a month whose branch clashes with the chart’s month branch. The engine accounts for this because it evaluates the date within its solar-term month, not as a floating stem-branch pair. The same date in a different year or month context can produce a different relation profile, and the engine recomputes accordingly.
