What BaZi Cannot Tell You

A BaZi chart is a structured model of time. The engine behind this site calculates the four pillars, hidden stems, ten gods, Na Yin, the twelve growth phases, symbolic stars, relative strength, and the layered progression of luck pillars and annual cycles. These are real outputs of a deterministic calculation. What matters is understanding what these outputs can and cannot support.

The line between the two is not always obvious. A chart can show recurring patterns in how a person experiences pressure, cooperation, resources, or expression. It cannot show whether a specific job offer will arrive on a Tuesday. It can indicate periods when certain themes become more active. It cannot identify the name of the person who will play a role in those themes.

This distinction is worth examining before reading any chart. Without it, a user may ask the wrong questions and receive answers that look meaningful but rest on nothing.

What the Engine Calculates

The engine processes a birth date and time through several layers. It converts the input to a true solar time correction, handles the lunar calendar conversion, and identifies the exact solar term boundaries such as 立春 (Li Chun, start of spring). From this it derives the four pillars — year, month, day, and hour — each expressed as a pair of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. These eight characters form the core of the chart. From the stems and branches, the engine computes hidden stems, the ten gods, Na Yin, the twelve growth phases, and a set of symbolic stars. It also assesses relative strength, which is a comparative measure of elemental support and output within the chart. The ten gods — such as Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Wealth, or Indirect Resource — are relational categories, not entities. The engine also produces timing layers: the luck pillars, annual cycles, monthly cycles, and daily cycles. These are derived from the same calendrical structure. They show which stems and branches become active at different stages of a life. The 大运 (Da Yun, luck pillars) guide covers how these layers are read without overstating what they mean. The annual report presents one of these layers for a given year, while the life report looks at longer spans.

The key point is that all of these outputs are structural. They describe a configuration of elements and the temporal sequence in which those elements come into contact with the natal chart. They do not describe events.

What BaZi Cannot Answer

The engine does not provide a bone-weight score, naming recommendations, exam result predictions, or any deterministic event prediction. These are listed as exclusions for a reason. A bone-weight score is a folk method that assigns a fixed numerical value to a chart. Naming recommendations require a different kind of judgment, one that depends on cultural preferences, phonetic considerations, and parental intent. Exam results depend on preparation, testing conditions, and external factors that no chart can encode.

More broadly, the engine does not answer questions about specific events. It cannot tell you whether a contract will be signed, whether a relationship will end, or whether a flight will be delayed. It cannot identify other people — a spouse's name, a competitor's identity, or a doctor's specialty. It cannot offer medical or legal conclusions. These are not limitations of implementation. They are limitations of the method itself.

The reason is straightforward. A BaZi chart is a snapshot of time. It shows which elemental configurations are present and how they change over decades. A configuration can be tense or harmonious, active or quiet. But a configuration is not an event. The same configuration can manifest in many different ways depending on a person's environment, education, health, choices, and the actions of others. A chart can show that a year brings a strong clash to the day branch. It cannot show what that clash will look like in daily life.

Why the Boundary Matters First

Reading a chart without this boundary leads to a specific kind of error. A user sees a year with heavy officer pressure and asks, “Will I be sued?” The chart does not contain that answer. It contains a pattern of pressure associated with the officer element. Whether that pressure shows up as legal trouble, a demanding supervisor, a health issue, or an internal sense of constraint depends on context no chart can capture.

The same applies to timing. A luck pillar may bring resource elements that suggest support or learning. That does not mean the person will enroll in a degree program. The boundary also protects against overconfidence. If a chart reader believes the chart can answer deterministic questions, they will produce answers. Those answers may feel specific and useful, but they are not derived from the chart. They are derived from the reader's assumptions, guesses, or the user's own hopes and fears. That is not interpretation. It is projection.

The practical result is that users should ask different questions. Instead of “Will I get the job?” ask “What themes are active in my chart this year?” Instead of “Who is my future spouse?” ask “What patterns recur in my relationship cycles?” The chart can answer the second kind of question with more integrity. It can show which elements dominate a period, how they interact with the natal chart, and where the tension or support is strongest. It cannot name the job, the spouse, or the outcome.

That distinction is the first thing to understand, before looking at any specific pillar or cycle. It does not make the chart less useful. It makes it usable at all.
