How Deep Oracle Scores Day Master Strength — Tiered Weighting From Season to Root

Why strength scoring is the prerequisite for useful-god selection

The four useful-god selection schools introduces the strength-balancing school's core proposition: "weak day master → support; strong day master → drain." This means the entire useful-god direction depends on the strong-vs-weak verdict. Get strength wrong and the chart's useful-god direction is reversed, and every downstream judgment reverses with it.

Many entry-level resources give only binary verdicts (strong vs weak), but real charts often fall in the middle. Deep Oracle's strength engine introduces tiered weighting and outputs distinct handling paths for balanced and extreme charts. This article opens up the actual algorithm.

The four scoring dimensions

Strength scoring is the weighted composition of four dimensions:

Dimension 1: Season (seasonal support) — weight 35%

The day master's element status in the birth-month branch determines the chart's "baseline force." Each of the five elements is in one of five states across the twelve month branches:

• Empowered (旺): own dominant month. Example: Jia/Yi-wood in Yin/Mao months; Bing/Ding-fire in Si/Wu months.
• Supported (相): months that generate me. Example: Jia/Yi-wood in Hai/Zi months (water generates wood).
• Resting / Trapped (休 / 囚): months I control or that control me. Example: Jia/Yi-wood in Shen/You months (metal controls wood) → trapped.
• Dead (死): the controlling force is dominant.

Seasonal scoring tiers:

• Empowered: +30
• Supported: +15
• Resting: 0
• Trapped: -15
• Dead: -30

Dimension 2: Root (branch foundation) — weight 30%

Whether the day master's element is "rooted" in the four branches — i.e. whether any branch's hidden stems contain same-element qi. Example: Jia-wood day master rooted if Yin / Mao / Chen branches contain wood-qi (Jia or Yi).

Root strength tiered by branch position and hidden-stem priority:

• Month branch primary-stem root (strongest): +25
• Day branch primary-stem root: +20
• Hour or year branch primary-stem root: +15
• Month / day branch secondary-stem root: +10
• Hour / year branch secondary-stem root: +5
• Residual-stem-only root: +3

If the day master has zero root (no branch hidden-stems contain same-element qi), the engine flags "rootless" — a key precondition for evaluating Following Pattern (从格) or Transformation Pattern (化格).

Dimension 3: Transparent stem (heavenly support) — weight 20%

Whether the day master's element has "same party" (Friend stars) or Resource stars transparent in the year/month/hour stems:

• Year/month/hour stem with Friend (same as me): each +8
• Stem with Rob Wealth: each +6
• Stem with Direct Resource (generates me): each +10
• Stem with Indirect Resource: each +8

Transparent Officer or Wealth (controls me or drains me) deduct with reversed sign.

Dimension 4: Adjustments (special structures) — weight 15%

This dimension catches special cases the standard three dimensions miss:

• Three-combination or three-meeting that generates the day master: +10 to +20
• Same-party stem combined-and-transformed away: example: Jia-wood day master with another Jia in the month stem, but that Jia combines with year-stem Ji to transform into Earth → that Jia no longer counts as same-party, deduct -10.
• Day master sitting on void: -8 (same-party support weakened).
• Day branch clashed: -5 (native's own foundation shaken).

Aggregate score mapping to strength tier

Four-dimension weighted aggregate maps to five strength tiers:

• ≥ +50: extreme strong (极旺)
• +20 to +50: strong (身旺)
• -20 to +20: balanced (中和)
• -50 to -20: weak (身弱)
• ≤ -50: extreme weak (极弱)

Key boundary handling:

• Extreme strong: may enter the single-element-dominance pattern channel (see pattern classics explained).
• Extreme weak: may enter the Following Pattern channel (day master powerless, follows the dominant force).
• Balanced: useful-god selection switches from "supplement what's lacking" to "protect existing balance."

The special handling of balanced charts

Classical literature treats balanced charts only briefly because most practical discussion centers on clear strong/weak cases. But balanced charts are not a small share of real practice — Deep Oracle's database shows roughly 18% of charts fall in the -20 to +20 balanced band.

For balanced charts, the engine's handling is qualitatively different from extreme charts:

1. Don't force a binary: instead of outputting "weak" or "strong," use the "balanced (slight bias)" label.
2. Useful-god direction returns multiple candidates: the strength-balancing school has no clear guidance for balanced charts, so the engine pivots to climate-adjustment school priority (use season-based needs).
3. Luck-pillar scoring shows narrower distribution: balanced charts are less sensitive to luck-pillar shifts; auspicious scores cluster in the middle range, with no extreme major-auspicious or major-adverse outliers.

Special pattern verdicts: Following / Transformation

When day master scores ≤ -50 (extreme weak), branches are entirely rootless, and the chart's force concentrates in one ten-god group → the engine enters the Following Pattern (从格) verification channel.

Additional Following Pattern conditions:

• Month branch belongs to the dominant force (e.g. Following Wealth Pattern requires month branch's element to match wealth)
• First luck pillar continues that dominance
• Day master has zero Resource generating it (any Resource generation invalidates Following)

Transformation Pattern (化格 — day master combining with another stem) conditions are even stricter:

• Day master combines with year or month stem (the five classical combinations: Jia-Ji → Earth, Yi-Geng → Metal, Bing-Xin → Water, Ding-Ren → Wood, Wu-Gui → Fire)
• Month branch supports the transformed element
• Day master itself has no strong root in the month branch

Both special verdicts have very high entry thresholds. Deep Oracle's engine defaults to conservative — unless all conditions are met, the chart is treated as standard pattern.

Engine relationship to the four useful-god schools

Strength scoring is the direct prerequisite for the strength-balancing useful god:

• Score above +20 → strength school recommends Output (drain), Wealth or Officer (counterbalance)
• Score below -20 → strength school recommends Resource (generate me), Friend (same as me)
• Balanced band (-20 to +20) → strength school has no clear direction, pivot to climate-adjustment

But the climate-adjustment school does not depend on strength scoring — it directly evaluates the month branch's seasonal condition and chooses useful god by hot/cold/dry/wet, regardless of day-master strength. So the same chart can have opposite useful-god verdicts under strength-balancing and climate-adjustment — this divergence is not an engine bug, it's the genuine methodological diversity within the BaZi tradition. Tunable thresholds, contestability

All thresholds above (seasonal scores, root weighting, transparent-stem tiers, aggregate-to-tier mapping) are tunable. When Deep Oracle has low confidence on a particular threshold, the in-depth BaZi reading marks the output as "low confidence."
