The Ten Planets in Astrology: Meanings from the Sun to Pluto

Deep Oracle Editorial Team · 2026-06-06 · 1 min read

In astrology, the "planets" are the "actors" of a chart, each governing a facet of your personality. By convention the Sun and Moon are counted in, together the "ten planets." Understanding them is the basis for reading a natal chart.

Personal Planets (fast-moving, shaping individuality)

  • Sun ☉: core self, will, vitality — who you are.
  • Moon ☽: emotions, instincts, inner needs — how you feel.
  • Mercury ☿: thought, communication, learning — how you think and speak.
  • Venus ♀: love, values, aesthetics — how you love and appreciate.
  • Mars ♂: action, desire, drive — how you pursue and express anger.

Social Planets (medium pace, bridging self and society)

  • Jupiter ♃: expansion, opportunity, belief — where you grow and find luck.
  • Saturn ♄: responsibility, limits, maturity — where you must work and be accountable.

Generational Planets (very slow, shaping whole generations)

  • Uranus ♅: revolution, awakening, independence.
  • Neptune ♆: dreams, spirituality, dissolution.
  • Pluto ♇: transformation, power, rebirth.

How to Use Them

Each planet sits in a sign (in what style) and a house (in which life area), and forms aspects with others (how they interact) — read together, that is the full you. The Big Three matter most. See your planetary placements with the free natal chart calculator.
