The Four Angles: Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and IC

The four angles are the most sensitive points of a chart, fixed precisely by birth time and place, forming two crossing axes. They are intensely personal — even people born the same day, minutes apart, can have different angles — so they depend most on an accurate birth time.

The Four Angles

• Ascendant (ASC, cusp of the 1st) · self: your outer image, first impression, and way of meeting the world — your Rising sign.
• Descendant (DESC, cusp of the 7th) · relationships: opposite the Ascendant; the qualities you seek in a partner and the kind of person who attracts you.
• Midheaven (MC, cusp of the 10th) · career: your vocational direction, public image, calling, and social achievement.
• IC (cusp of the 4th) · roots: opposite the MC; home, origins, the private inner self, and emotional belonging.

The Two Axes

• Ascendant–Descendant axis: "me" and "we" — the balance of self and relationship.
• Midheaven–IC axis: "public" and "private" — the tension of career and family, outer achievement and inner foundation. Many core life themes orbit these two axes.

Why They Matter

• A planet near an angle (conjunct it) is strongly amplified, becoming a prominent theme of the personality.
• Transits crossing an angle often mark major turning points (a transit hitting the MC = a career shift).
• The angles are extremely time-sensitive — one of the clearest reasons an accurate birth time matters.
