What this overlay actually is

Sun in 7th house synastry means one person's natal Sun falls in the other person's seventh house. The Sun is the least negotiable thing in a chart — it is not a mood or a preference but the person's central organising identity. Dropping that into someone else's partnership sector produces one of the fastest and most confident recognitions in synastry.

The house person tends to arrive at this is the sort of person I am supposed to be with very early, sometimes before they have any information that would justify it.

Why the seventh house makes the Sun behave this way

Every house describes an area of life; the seventh describes the person opposite. It is the house of the partner, and it is also, in traditional and modern readings alike, the house of projection — the sector where we place qualities we experience as belonging to someone else rather than to us.

So a Sun landing there is not just seen. It is seen as a partner, and it is seen through whatever the house person's seventh house already contains. The house person's Descendant sign, and any of their own planets in that house, colour the reading substantially. • Return contacts from A into B's chart — particularly A's planets in B's first or seventh — make the seeing mutual and are the single best corrective to the projection pattern.
• A crowded seventh house in the house person's own natal chart means the Sun person is landing among the house person's existing partnership material, which intensifies everything described here.

What this contact is not

It is not evidence of compatibility. Being recognised as partner-shaped and being a good partner are unrelated claims, and this overlay speaks only to the first.

It is not rare enough to be meaningful on its own. The Sun spends a month in each sign; a given person's Sun lands in the seventh house of a substantial fraction of the population.

And it is not a soulmate marker. That framing is common in writing about this contact and it is exactly the framing most likely to accelerate the failure described above.

Limitations and contested points

House systems disagree, and a Sun deep in the seventh may be an eighth-house Sun under whole sign. No method settles it.

More fundamentally: this is a symbolic vocabulary, not a measurement. It has no demonstrated predictive power over whether a relationship works, and its actual usefulness lies in giving a name to something people notice anyway — including, in this case, the uncomfortable and useful observation that certainty about a person can arrive well before knowledge of them does.
