A planet does not truly "move backward." Retrograde is an optical effect: as Earth and another planet shift relative positions in their orbits, the other planet appears, from Earth, to move briefly backward against the stars — just as a slower car seems to drift backward when you overtake it on a highway. So retrograde is "apparent," not real reversal.
