The overlay

Overlay two charts and one person's Mars may land in the other's fifth house — the sector governing romance in the courtship sense, play, and enjoyment for its own sake. Mars brings drive, pursuit and appetite to it.

Mars in the house of pursuit does what you would expect. It pursues.

What it produces

Chemistry. This is one of the stronger physical-attraction overlays, and unlike Venus contacts it carries wanting rather than appreciating.

Active courtship. The Mars person initiates here, visibly. Plans get made, moves get made, the relationship has momentum from the start.

Fun with energy in it. The fifth house on its own is playful; add Mars and it becomes competitive games, physical activity, doing things rather than merely enjoying them.

Creative drive. The fifth is the creative house, and this overlay often shows up in pairs who push each other's work.

The characteristic problem: it is built for the chase

Mars is a pursuit function. It is at its best when there is something to pursue, and its interest is structurally tied to that.

In the fifth house — the house of courtship rather than partnership — this creates a specific pattern. The relationship is exciting while it is being won. Once it is settled, the overlay has considerably less to do, and one or both people notice the energy dropping without being able to attribute it.

This is not the same as losing interest in the person. It is a contact whose fuel is a phase of the relationship rather than the relationship itself, and knowing that in advance is most of the remedy.

The other version of the same problem: the Mars person keeps the game going past the point where the house person wants it to stop. Ambiguity that was fun in month two is not fun in year two, and Mars in the fifth has some appetite for keeping the chase alive by not quite settling.

Limitations and contested points

Standing caveat: symbolic framework, nothing predictive. As with the rest of synastry, its use is descriptive — it gives a name to a pattern people notice anyway, in this case the very ordinary experience of a relationship that was thrilling to begin and harder to simply have.
