How Astrological Transits Work: When Planets Move Across Your Chart

Transits are astrology's core technique for timing. Your natal chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at birth; the real planets, meanwhile, keep moving. When those moving planets form aspects to the planets in your birth chart, that is a "transit" — marking the energy themes and timing of life's different phases.

Fast vs Slow Planets

• Fast-planet transits (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars): quick and short (hours to weeks), governing daily moods, rhythms, and small events.
• Slow-planet transits (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto): slow-moving and far-reaching (months to years), governing major turning points and stages of growth. These are what astrological "forecasting" weighs most.

A Few Landmark Transits

• Saturn return (around 29.5, 59): maturation and a restructuring of life.
• Jupiter transits: about one house per year, bringing expansion and opportunity in that area.
• Hard aspects from Pluto/Neptune/Uranus: deep, long transformation, dissolution, or upheaval.

How to View Transits

• Transits describe energy themes and timing tendencies, not fixed events — the same transit shows up differently for different people and choices.
• Transits are the "weather," the natal chart is the "climate": the weather changes, but how you respond is always yours.
• They are often read alongside other timing systems.
