The Ten Day Masters

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day pillar — the "self" of the whole chart, the reference point for every Ten God, strength reading, and Useful God. Each of the ten stems carries its own archetype.

Assessing Day Master Strength

What Is Day Master Strength?

Day Master strength (日主旺衰) — "strong body" (身强) vs "weak body" (身弱) — describes whether the Day Master's element holds power or weakness relative to the rest of the chart. Strong: its element dominates with ample support. Weak: its element is outnumbered and under-resourced.

An important caveat: the mainstream school (Zi Ping Zhen Quan) places chart pattern (格局) first, treating strength as a supporting tool, not a final verdict. It notes that some patterns — like "Follow" patterns (从格) — form precisely because the Day Master is extremely weak; there, strength yields to pattern logic.

Three Dimensions of Strength

1. Seasonal timing (得令) — most important
Is the birth month's seasonal energy favorable to the Day Master's element? A Jia Wood (甲) Day Master born in Yin/Mao (寅卯, Spring) is in season and strong; in Shen/You (申酉, Autumn) it is out of season and weak. Seasonal timing carries the greatest weight.
2. Rooted support (得地)
Do the Earthly Branches contain "roots" (同气) for the Day Master's element? For Jia Wood (甲), having Yin (寅), Mao (卯), Chen (辰), or Hai (亥) constitutes root support. More roots mean more stable strength.
3. Peer & Resource assistance (得助)
Do the Heavenly Stems include Peers (比劫, same element) or Resource Stars (印星, the element that produces the Day Master)? Peers reinforce it directly; Resource nurtures it through the production cycle.

Seasonal timing weighs most. General rule: in season + rooted = strong; out of season + no roots + no help = weak. The grey zone between is where analysis is most debated — and where systematic verification adds the most value.

How Strength Shapes the Useful God

Strong Day Master: the excess needs outlets and restraint — favor Output (食伤) and Wealth/Authority (财官); avoid Resource and Peers (印比), which over-inflate it. Weak Day Master: the deficit needs support — favor Resource (印绶) and Peers (比劫); avoid Wealth/Authority (财官), which tax the depleted self.

This is only the baseline. In practice, Useful God selection prioritizes the chart pattern (格局): when the pattern-based and strength-based Useful Gods agree, the reading is clearest; when they conflict (e.g. the pattern calls for Authority, but an extremely weak Day Master cannot sustain it), a finer calibration is needed — the advanced frontier of BaZi.
