Guide to Day Master Strength Assessment
What Is Day Master Strength?
Day Master strength (日主旺衰) — also called "strong body" (身强) vs. "weak body" (身弱) — describes whether the Day Master's element holds a position of power or weakness relative to the other elements in the chart. A strong Day Master means its element dominates the chart with ample support. A weak Day Master means its element is outnumbered and under-resourced.
An important caveat: the modern mainstream school (Zi Ping Zhen Quan system) places chart pattern (格局) determination first, treating strength assessment as a supporting tool rather than a final verdict. Zi Ping Zhen Quan explicitly notes that certain patterns — such as "Follow" patterns (从格) — form precisely because the Day Master is extremely weak. In such cases, the concept of strength yields to pattern logic.
Three Dimensions of Strength Assessment
1. Seasonal Timing (得令) — Most Important:Is the birth month's seasonal energy favorable to the Day Master's element? For example, a Jia Wood (甲) Day Master born in Yin/Mao months (寅卯, Spring) is "in season" and strong; born in Shen/You months (申酉, Autumn) it is "out of season" and weak. Seasonal timing carries the greatest weight.
2. Rooted Support (得地):Do the Earthly Branches contain "roots" (同气) for the Day Master's element? For Jia Wood (甲), having Yin (寅), Mao (卯), Chen (辰), or Hai (亥) in the Branches constitutes root support. More roots mean more stable, grounded strength.
3. Peer & Resource Assistance (得助):Do the Heavenly Stems include Peers (比劫, same element) or Resource Stars (印星, the element that produces the Day Master)? Peer support reinforces the Day Master directly; Resource Stars nurture it through the production cycle.
Seasonal timing carries the most weight. General rule: in season + rooted = strong; out of season + no roots + no help = weak. The grey zone between these extremes is where the most analytical debate occurs — and where systematic AI verification delivers the greatest value.
How Strength Affects Useful God Selection
For a strong Day Master: the excess energy needs outlets and restraint — favorable elements include Output Stars (食伤, which drain the Day Master) and Wealth/Authority (财官, which control it); unfavorable are Resource and Peers (印比, which further inflate already excessive strength). For a weak Day Master: the deficit needs support — favorable are Resource Stars (印绶) and Peers (比劫); unfavorable are Wealth and Authority (财官, which tax or attack the depleted Day Master).
However, this is only the baseline rule. In practice, Useful God selection prioritizes chart pattern (格局). When the pattern-based Useful God aligns with the strength-based Useful God, the reading is clearest. When they conflict (e.g., the pattern calls for Authority as Useful God, but the Day Master is extremely weak and typically cannot sustain Authority pressure), a more nuanced calibration is required — this is the advanced frontier of BaZi analysis.
