Spirit of Doom (亡神): A BaZi Spirit-Star

Definition

Wang Shen (the Spirit of Doom) is an inauspicious BaZi [spirit-star](/bazi/glossary/shen-sha); "Wang" carries a sense of loss and inner drain. It signifies depth of strategy and cleverness that can "outsmart itself," or self-consumption through scheming or hidden worry. This site derives it from the **day branch** (the year branch may also be used).

Derivation

Wang Shen is computed from the trine, taking the trine's "Officer/Salary" position: Shen-Zi-Chen sees Hai; Yin-Wu-Xu sees Si; Si-You-Chou sees Shen; Hai-Mao-Wei sees Yin. It is discussed opposite [Jie Sha](/bazi/glossary/jie-sha).

Meaning and Use

- Wang Shen signifies strategy, inner depth, and a reserved sense of crisis; well-used, the makings of a strategist or planner. - Unchecked, it tends toward suspicion, hidden drain, losing much for little, or worry of legal trouble and covert loss. - Fortune depends on whether the chart can use it and whether a [Noble](/bazi/glossary/tian-yi-gui-ren) resolves it.

Common Misconception

**"Wang Shen means great calamity."** It signifies inner tension and cunning more than disaster; whether it manifests as ill depends on the whole chart.
