Period 4, the Four Green Xun Wood period, covers 1924–1943, opening the Middle Cycle. It corresponds to the Xun trigram, the Wood element, the southeast, and the Wen Qu star. Xun is wind and the eldest daughter — culture, writing, dissemination, the spread of ideas. Traditional readings set the period's printing, publishing and educational expansion against Xun's imagery of wind carrying things far; as elsewhere in the system, this is retrospective tendency-reading, not causation.
