Period 3 — Three Jade Zhen Wood (1904–1923)

Period 3, the Three Jade Zhen Wood period, covers 1904–1923, the closing period of the Upper Cycle. It corresponds to the Zhen trigram, the Wood element, the east, and the Lu Cun star. Zhen is thunder and the eldest son — initiation, upheaval, sudden movement. The two decades it labels saw the fall of imperial China and the First World War, and Xuankong writers conventionally read the era against Zhen's imagery of breaking and new growth; the correspondence is a traditional reading, not a causal claim.
