Prosperity Star: The Wealth Indicator in Your BaZi Chart
Definition
The Prosperity Star marks the position of official rank, salary, steady income, and baseline material wealth in a BaZi chart. It reveals the primary source of a person's economic security and social standing—the first indicator of financial stability.
How It Is Calculated
The Prosperity Star is located by matching the Day Master's stem to its designated "prosperity position" (禄位):
- Jia (甲) prosperity in Yin (寅), Yi (乙) in Mao (卯), Bing (丙) in Si (巳), Ding (丁) in Wu (午)
- Wu (戊) in Si (巳), Ji (己) in Wu (午), Geng (庚) in Shen (申), Xin (辛) in You (酉)
- Ren (壬) in Hai (亥), Gui (癸) in Zi (子)
Search the four pillars for the matching branch. If that branch appears, the Prosperity Star is activated. It may occupy any of the four pillars; its position affects both the timing of its influence and its character.
Position and Meaning
Month Pillar is the most significant placement. It indicates steady income from employment or official position, typically established early in life. The primary source is regular salary (正财, Proper Wealth) or official revenue (官禄, Official Prosperity).
Day Branch Prosperity Star shows that the spouse strengthens finances and domestic foundation remains solid. It also represents one's own innate prosperity capacity.
Year Pillar indicates ancestral property, family inheritance, or early economic advantage. If attacked by clash, it warns of inherited wealth loss.
Hour Pillar reveals late-life stability or retirement security. Watch for whether children can sustain the family legacy.
Assessing Strength
The Prosperity Star's potency depends on the vigor of the branch it occupies. When the prosperity position's branch:
- Combines with the Day Master's stem, strength increases
- Is attacked or clashed, the star weakens and wealth scatters
- Is drawn away by another stem, prosperity diverts elsewhere
- Enters storage (库), prosperity emerges suddenly but lacks continuity
A Prosperity Star with no root support (its branch is weak or empty) exists in name only and cannot produce stable income.
Relationship With Other Stars
Prosperity Star and Proper Wealth: Prosperity is passive income from position; Proper Wealth is active entrepreneurial gain. A strong Month Pillar Prosperity Star ensures steady salary, but the person may lack the business drive of someone with robust Proper Wealth.
Prosperity Star and Eating God: The Eating God harms officials (克官). If Eating God dominates and Prosperity is weak, the person loses stable employment and shifts to freelance work. When they occupy the same pillar, job changes are frequent.
Prosperity Star and Food God: The Food God produces wealth. Combined with Prosperity Star, it signals profit flowing from one's position—a sustainable cycle.

Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: Strong Prosperity Star means wealth. The star indicates *stability*, not volume. Someone with strong Prosperity may earn a steady salary that is modest in absolute terms, while someone with robust Eating God or Proper Wealth may have volatile but larger total income. Think of Prosperity as your "floor," not your ceiling.
Misconception 2: Prosperity Star clashed means job loss. A clash does not automatically destroy if the prosperity branch retains root support. It usually signals job transition or departmental change, not termination. The key question is whether the branch is completely depleted and whether an official star protects it.
Worked Example
A person with Jia (甲) Day Master has Jia prosperity in Yin (寅). Their chart reads: Jia Zi year, Bing Yin month, Jia Wu day, Ren Zi hour.
The month pillar Bing Yin contains the prosperity position Yin. Jia's prosperity is anchored in Yin, which is robust; the month is also energized, and the year branch Zi water supports Yin wood. This person typically builds stable employment or official position early, with a clear income stream and resistant economic foundation.
If the chart included Wu fire clashing Yin wood, the Prosperity Star would be under pressure. Specific years would bring job transition risk, requiring caution around income changes.
