Three principal birth-year traditions remain unresolved
UNESCO's History of Civilizations of Central Asia says Genghis Khan's birth year is uncertain: most Chinese and Mongolian records support the water-horse year 1162, while Persian sources support 1155 or 1167. A Cambridge-published article independently records all three years and concludes that the exact year cannot be established. This page displays about 1162 while preserving the alternatives. Stored 31 May is an internal sorting value, not a sourced birthday. The birth tradition points to Delüün-Boldog on the upper Onon, but its modern location is disputed. No cited source records a birth hour.
Source-bounded historical scope
The UNESCO chapter supports Temüjin's unification of the Mongol tribes, receipt of the title Genghis Khan in 1206, campaigns against the Jin and into Central Asia, and death in 1227. Its caution that the early Secret History narrative is substantially romanticized is preserved; legendary childhood episodes are not treated here as settled fact.
Why no chart is published
