Yongshen and Luck Pillars: The Driving Force of Decade-Long Cycles

When a Decade Turns Against You

You have identified your 用神 (yongshen, useful god). Now what? The chart sits still, but life does not. The Luck Pillars (大运, Dayun) are where the static pattern of your Bazi meets the relentless flow of time. Each ten-year block either nourishes your 用神 or grinds it down. The classical text 《子平真诠》 (Ziping Zhenquan) devotes a core chapter to this very question: how does the 用神 dictate the reading of Luck Pillars? The answer is simple in principle, exacting in practice.

Classical Definition

《子平真诠》 states: “凡看大运,专看用神之喜忌。” (In evaluating Luck Pillars, exclusively examine the likes and dislikes of the 用神.) A favorable Luck Pillar (喜神, xishen) is one that supplies or strengthens the 用神. A hostile Luck Pillar (忌神, jishen) is one that attacks the 用神 or gives power to the 忌神 (taboo god) — the element that harms the chart’s balance. The 仇神 (choushen, enemy god) is a secondary antagonist that assists the taboo god. In short, every decade is judged by one criterion: does this pillar help or hurt my 用神?

When to Use This Method

This method is your primary tool when the chart’s structure is clear — when the 用神 is unambiguous and the Four Pillars show strong polarity. It works best for charts where one or two elements dominate the 日主 (day master) or the overall dynamic. Use it when you need to forecast the flow of major life phases: career rises, relationship turning points, health changes. Do not use it as a replacement for 调候 (climate adjustment) or 病药 (illness remedy) methods when the chart has deep seasonal or compositional anomalies. Each method has its scope; this one rules the ten-year cycles.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Determine the 用神 (Useful God). This is the element that restores balance — often the one that controls the strongest element or supports the weak day master. For example, if the Day Master is 甲木 (Jia Wood) born in autumn when metal dominates, the 用神 might be 丙火 (Bing Fire) to weaken metal and warm the wood.

  2. Identify the 忌神 (Taboo God) and 仇神 (Enemy God). The 忌神 is the element that directly assaults the 用神 or amplifies the chart’s existing imbalance. The 仇神 is the element that generates the 忌神. In the above example, if 用神 is fire, then water (which extinguishes fire) is the 忌神, and metal (which produces water) is the 仇神.

  3. Examine Each Luck Pillar. A Luck Pillar has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Both matter, but the stem tends to act faster, the branch more stable. Compare both to the 用神:

    • If the stem or branch is the same element as the 用神, or generates it, that decade is favorable.
    • If the stem or branch is the 忌神 or its generator (仇神), the decade is hostile.
    • Mixed signals require careful weighting. For instance, stem favorable, branch hostile might still mean a net positive with hidden friction.
  4. Look at the Interaction with the Original Chart. Sometimes a Luck Pillar contains a combination that transforms its nature. For example, a 申 (Shen) branch buried in an Earthly Branch can be half-water, half-metal depending on the combination. Always check the full context.

  5. Assess Intensity. If the Luck Pillar supplies the 用神 abundantly — multiple hidden stems supporting it — the decade can be transformative. If it only brushes the 用神, the effect is milder.

Worked Example

Let us take a hypothetical chart for Mr. Lin, born in the year of 甲子 (Yang Wood, Rat). Day Master: 甲木 (Jia Wood). The Four Pillars show strong 辛金 (Xin Metal) in autumn, overwhelming the wood. Water (壬水, Ren Water) appears once, but cannot fully neutralize the metal. The practitioner chooses 丙火 (Bing Fire) as the 用神 — fire controls metal and warms the wood.

  • First Luck Pillar (age 1-10): 庚午 (Geng Wu). Stem 庚 (Yang Metal) is the 忌神 (it generates water and controls wood). Branch 午 (Horse, Fire) contains Ding Fire, a support for the 用神. The stem harms, the branch helps. Net effect: mixed early years with struggles but some moments of support.
  • Second Luck Pillar (age 11-20): 辛未 (Xin Wei). Stem 辛 (Yin Metal) is still the 忌神. Branch 未 (Goat) has Yi Wood (strengthening day master) and Ding Fire (supports 用神). Slightly better but still offset by the metal stem.
  • Third Luck Pillar (age 21-30): 壬申 (Ren Shen). Stem 壬 (Yang Water) is the 仇神 — it extinguishes the 用神 fire. Branch 申 (Monkey) hides Geng Metal (generates water and attacks wood). This decade is strongly hostile. The practitioner would warn about health issues related to the liver (wood) and possible financial drains.
  • Fourth Luck Pillar (age 31-40): 癸酉 (Gui You). Stem 癸 (Yin Water) again 仇神. Branch 酉 (Rooster, pure metal) strengthens the 忌神 metal. Another difficult decade.
  • Fifth Luck Pillar (age 41-50): 甲戌 (Jia Xu). Stem 甲 (Yang Wood) strengthens the day master — not directly the 用神, but useful. Branch 戌 (Dog) contains Ding Fire and Wu Earth. Ding Fire supports the 用神. This decade marks a turn: the wood can now stand, and fire appears in the branch. A period of recovery and modest success.
  • Sixth Luck Pillar (age 51-60): 乙亥 (Yi Hai). Stem 乙 (Yin Wood) helps the day master. Branch 亥 (Pig) contains Ren Water (仇神) and Jia Wood. Water still threatens the 用神 fire, but the wood stems soften the blow. Moderate with care.
  • Seventh Luck Pillar (age 61-70): 丙子 (Bing Zi). Stem 丙 (Yang Fire) is the long-awaited 用神 itself! This is a major favorable decade. Branch 子 (Rat) is pure water — the 忌神. The stem’s fire confronts the branch’s water directly. The decade begins with breakthrough energy but ends with a counterforce. The practitioner would advise leveraging the first half of the decade heavily.

The example shows that even a clear 用神 does not guarantee linear fortune. The interplay with each Luck Pillar’s stem and branch creates a unique rhythm.

Common Pitfalls

  • Ignoring 仇神 (Enemy God). Some practitioners only look at attacks on the 用神 itself. But the enemy god quietly feeds the 忌神. A Luck Pillar that produces the 忌神 is almost as bad as one that is the 忌神.
  • Overvaluing the Stem. The stem acts quickly, but the branch governs deeper stability. A favorable stem with a hostile branch can bring a false start — immediate gain that collapses. The reverse can mean slow, solid progress.
  • Neglecting Hidden Stems. Each Earthly Branch contains hidden Heavenly Stems. The 子 (Rat) is only water, but 寅 (Tiger) contains fire, earth, and wood. If the 用神 is fire, a 寅 branch can be a lifeline even if the main stem is hostile. Always decode the branch’s inner composition.
  • Confusing 调候 with 用神. The 用神 derived from balance may conflict with the seasonal 调候. For example, a winter-born chart with cold water needs fire for warmth even if the day master is strong. In such cases, the 调候 用神 often overrides the conventional one. This method works best when the season is already addressed.

How This Method Differs from Related Methods

This method is often confused with the 扶抑 (support-suppress) or 病药 (illness-remedy) approaches. Let me clarify:

  • 扶抑 (Support-Suppress): Focuses on the day master’s strength. If the day master is weak, support it; if strong, suppress it. The 用神 here is either the element that strengthens the day master (if weak) or the element that controls it (if strong). That is different from our luck-reading 用神, which may be neither directly about the day master but about the chart’s overall imbalance. In 扶抑, the Luck Pillar reading still uses the same principle, but the 用神 definition is narrower.
  • 病药 (Illness-Remedy): This method treats the chart’s most problematic element as the “illness” and picks a “remedy” that destroys it. The 用神 becomes the remedy. For Luck Pillars, a favorable pillar supplies the remedy, hostile pillar strengthens the illness. Our method is similar in logic but differs in that the 用神 is not always the “remedy” — it is the “useful god” that establishes harmony, which may be a more holistic concept.
  • 调候 (Climate Adjustment): This method prioritizes the seasonal condition (warmth, cold, dryness, dampness). The 用神 is often fire for cold charts, water for hot charts. When applying our Luck Pillar method, you must first settle whether the 调候 用神 overrides the structural 用神. In our method, we assume the 用神 is already correctly selected; the rule remains the same: favorable luck helps that 用神.

The key difference is that our method is purely about the relationship between the Luck Pillar and the chosen 用神 — it does not reassess the 用神 for each pillar. That consistency is its strength.

One YMYL Line: Pattern Not Destiny

Bazi is a pattern of probabilities, not a fixed script. A hostile Luck Pillar does not doom you; it signals areas where effort must double and caution must reign. The 用神 is your compass, but you still sail the ship.
