BaZi Five Elements: How to Count Elements in Four Pillars

The correct question is not which tool is right, but which counting convention the tool is using. The reference data should be the hidden stem list and the weighting rule, not only the final five numbers.

If the hidden stem lists differ, the totals will differ even if both tools count each listed stem equally. The second thing to check is the weighting. Two tools may show the same hidden stems for every branch but still produce different totals because one counts root qi more heavily and the other counts all layers equally. The third thing to check is whether the tool counts occurrences or percentages. A tool that reports percentages may make a small residual qi appear negligible, while a tool that counts occurrences shows it as one full unit.
