Analyzing the Ten Gods: Five Element Relations from the Day Master

The ten gods, or 十神, are derived from the relation between the day master and the other stems and branches in a chart. The system is built on five basic relations: same as me, generated by me, controlled by me, controlling me, and generating me. Each of these five relations is then split by whether the yin-yang polarity of the two elements is the same or different, producing ten named categories. This is a structural language of relation, not an inventory of fixed personality labels.

成对出现的十神容易混用

Because each of the five relations divides into two names, the pairs are easy to conflate. The split is fixed. For the relation of same as me, same polarity is 比肩, different polarity is 劫财. For generated by me, same polarity is 食神, different polarity is 伤官. For controlled by me, same polarity is 偏财, different polarity is 正财. For controlling me, same polarity is 七杀, different polarity is 正官. For generating me, same polarity is 偏印, different polarity is 正印.

These pairings are not graded by strength or quality in themselves. They are first a statement of direction and polarity. The problem in many readings is that a 十神 is treated as if its name carried a fixed meaning wherever it appears. That is not how the system works. The same word on the year pillar, month pillar, day branch, or hour pillar is read under a different lens because the position changes what the relation touches. A 十神 appearing in the timing layer is also read differently from one in the natal chart. The word does not migrate with a stable character definition attached to it.

阴阳同异这一条分界

The same-different polarity line is the first divider in every pair. For the relation of same as me, 比肩 and 劫财 are both same-element relations, but 比肩 is the same polarity and 劫财 is the opposite polarity. The distinction is not minor because polarity affects how the relation expresses its resource logic. 比肩 reads more as peer force, the presence of a same-kind actor. 劫财 reads more as resource branching or division of available material. When both appear in a chart, the task is not to choose one as the real one and discard the other. The task is to see which has a root, which is controlled or transformed, and which is currently activated. The pair describes a field of same-element force, and the polarity line tells the reader how that force leans.

The same logic applies across the other four relations. The polarity divider is not a scale of good to bad. It is a structural marker that changes the functional name, and therefore the functional reading, of the relation.

食神与伤官、正印与偏印

食神 and 伤官 both belong to the relation of generated by me, and together they are called 食伤. The difference lies in yin-yang polarity. 食神 is the same polarity output, read as a sustainable, regular form of production. 伤官 is the opposite polarity output, read as a sharper, more piercing expression. The practical divider is often described as sustainable output versus pointed expression. Both are outputs, but they do not sit the same way in a chart reading. One is not simply a stronger version of the other; the polarity changes the texture of what the day master produces.

正印 and 偏印 both belong to the relation of generating me. 正印 is the opposite polarity generating force, read as the steady, structured support that can receive and stabilize. 偏印 is the same polarity generating force, read as a less settled, more absorptive or unconventional form of support. The distinction matters when the chart asks whether something produced by the day master can be received and held. The polarity line tells the reader what kind of receiving structure is present.

正财与偏财、正官与七杀

正财 and 偏财 are both relations of controlled by me, but they describe the day master’s relation to wealth objects rather than wealth itself. The polarity difference changes the nature of that relation. 正财 is opposite polarity, read as a steadier, more contractual attachment to resources. 偏财 is same polarity, read as a looser, more fluid or opportunity-based attachment to resources. The term 财星 points to the relation with wealth objects. 财库 points to something else: the gathering, storage, and opening conditions of resources. Seeing a 财星 in the chart does not mean the resources can be retained. Retention is a separate question involving the storage structure and the timing of its opening.

正官 and 七杀 are both relations of controlling me. 正官 is opposite polarity control, read as a structured, rule-based pressure. 七杀 is same polarity control, read as a sharper, less mediated pressure. There is a common claim that the same star is called 偏官 when controlled and 七杀 when uncontrolled. This claim is not supported by the source text. A full check of 《三命通会》 shows no sentence stating that controlled is 偏官 and uncontrolled is 七杀. The book uses 偏官 and 七煞 interchangeably for the same star throughout. The two terms do not mark two different states of control.

辨析之后仍要看整张盘

The order of reading matters. First establish the direction of the relation: same as me, generated by me, controlled by me, controlling me, or generating me. Then see whether the star has strength. Only after that should thematic language be applied. If the order is reversed, the reading becomes a list of keywords attached to names, and the names lose their structural function.

The difference between 食伤生财 and 伤官配印 shows why the full chart matters. Both paths begin from 食伤, but they move in different directions. 食伤生财 asks whether the output can connect to wealth resources. 伤官配印 asks whether the sharp output can be received and contained by the 印 star. The 财 star and the 印 star perform different roles. The presence of 食伤 alone does not tell the reader which path is active. Using one reading because 食伤 appears in both cases is a category error.

The same caution applies to all ten gods. A 十神 is a relation word. The relation is defined by element direction and polarity. Its meaning in a specific chart is then shaped by position, root, control, transformation, and activation. The ten names are the beginning of the reading, not the conclusion.
