Seven Killings (Pian Guan) in BaZi: Definition and Chart Influence

In popular usage, 七杀命格 is often treated as a fixed personality type or a built-in destiny label. People ask whether they have a 七杀命格 as if it were a stable category with a single meaning. The actual technical situation is different. In classical 子平 terms, 七杀 is a relation between stems and branches in a natal chart, not a self-contained personality module. The phrase 命格 adds a layer of folk categorization that does not always match how the old texts use the term.
命格这个词在民间与在子平术语中的落差
In folk discourse, 命格 sounds like a permanent type: someone is a 七杀命格, a 正官命格, or a 伤官命格. This way of speaking treats the label almost like a zodiac category. In 子平 terminology, however, what is being discussed is usually a 十神 relation, a positional function within a specific chart. The same person can have multiple 十神 relations at once. The word 命格 therefore carries a looseness in everyday use that the technical vocabulary does not support. The older literature speaks of 格 in the context of the month branch, but it does not turn a single 十神 into a complete account of a person.
七杀是十神不是命格
七杀 is one of the ten 十神. It is defined as the element that overcomes the day master, 克伐日主, while sharing the same polarity, 阴阳属性相同. For example, if the day master is 甲, which is 阳木, then 庚, which is 阳金, attacks the day master and shares the same polarity. 庚 is therefore the 七杀 of 甲. If the day master were 乙,阴木, then 辛,阴金, would be the 七杀. This shows that 七杀 is not an inherent property of a specific heavenly stem. It arises only in relation to a particular day master. Change the day master, and what counts as 七杀 changes as well.
The technical location of 七杀 can be in the heavenly stems of the four pillars or in the hidden stems of the earthly branches, the 地支藏干. Its meaning depends on the surrounding structure: what supports it, what restrains it, what it generates, and what it controls. None of this makes it a self-standing 命格 in the folk sense. It is a relationship, not a type.
偏官与七杀是同一颗星
The term 偏官 is another name for 七杀. They refer to the same star, the same relation between the day master and the attacking element of the same polarity. Some modern popular sources claim that the two names mark a difference: that a controlled 七杀 is called 偏官, while an uncontrolled one is called 七杀. This distinction is often repeated in online writing, but it is not supported by the classical text most commonly cited for such claims.
A check of the complete text of 《三命通会》 finds no passage stating that 有制称偏官、无制称七杀, that is, that the controlled case is called 偏官 and the uncontrolled case is called 七杀. In that book, 偏官 and 七煞 are used interchangeably for the same star. The two names do not encode a moral distinction between good and bad manifestations. They are alternative labels for one relation.
把十神当人格分类会出什么问题
If the ten 十神 are treated as personality categories, several distortions follow. First, the relational character of the system disappears. A 十神 is not a fixed trait of a person; it is a function of the day master’s interaction with other stems and branches. The same physical element can be one 十神 for one day master and a different 十神 for another. A chart with 庚 present may show 七杀 for an 甲 day master, but 正官 for a 丁 day master, 食神 for a 壬 day master, and so on. The meaning is not in the element alone.
Second, treating 七杀 as a personality type encourages the belief that having 七杀 in a chart is itself the problem. This turns a structural relation into a fixed flaw. In actual practice, the same star can produce very different outcomes depending on whether it is controlled, supported, weakened, or combined. The old discussions are not about whether the star exists, but about whether it is properly handled within the chart.
Third, the personality approach invites vague generalization. Someone may read that 七杀 means strong, resolute, aggressive, or prone to pressure, but these are derived descriptions at best. They do not replace the structural reading of the chart. The classical method asks what the 七杀 does in the specific configuration, not what a 七杀 person is like in general.
这个搜索想问的那件事该怎么看
What the search for 七杀命格 is usually trying to ask can be approached in two ways. One is the folk question: Does having 七杀 mean my life is dangerous, harsh, or full of pressure? The other is the technical question: Does my chart form a 七杀格, and how should that be read?
The popular claim that 命带七杀 equals disaster is too simple. The important distinction in the older literature is not whether the star is present, but whether it is restrained or transformed, 有无制化. A strong 七杀 that is controlled can be a source of power and structure. A weak or poorly controlled 七杀 may express itself as pressure, conflict, or illness. The star itself is neither good nor bad. Its effect follows from the whole chart.
《子平真诠》, in the section on 偏官, says that 七杀 is something that attacks the person, 攻身之物, and may appear to be not an auspicious star, 似非吉神. Yet it also says that very great and noble configurations often carry 煞,大贵之格往往带煞. The key is whether it is controlled and directed properly, 制驭得法. This is not a statement that everyone with 七杀 is great, nor that everyone with 七杀 suffers. It is a statement about structural conditions.
As for the formal 格, the method used by this site’s engine is specific. If the month branch, 月令地支, has 七杀 as its principal qi, 本气, then the chart is established as a 七杀格. The procedure does not depend on whether 七杀 appears elsewhere in the stems or hidden stems. It looks only at whether the main qi of the month branch is 七杀 for the day master. This follows the standard approach in which the month branch determines the primary pattern, while other positions modify it.
Therefore, when someone asks whether they have a 七杀命格, the more precise question is whether the month branch gives a 七杀格. If it does, then the reading proceeds by examining how that 七杀 is handled: whether it is controlled by 食神, whether it is supported by 财, whether it combines with other elements, whether it is rooted or not, and how the day master’s strength stands in relation to it. If the month branch does not give a 七杀格, then 七杀 may still appear elsewhere in the chart as a relation, but it is not the governing pattern.
In short, 七杀命格 as a search term points toward two levels of usage. In everyday speech, it is a loose label. In 子平 method, it should be broken into the 十神 relation called 七杀 or 偏官 and the formal 七杀格 derived from the month branch. The old texts treat the star as neutral in itself and focus on whether it is controlled or not. That is the distinction that matters, rather than the mere presence or absence of 七杀.
