偏印格 is one of the standard pattern classifications in bazi, or Four Pillars analysis. The term combines the Ten Gods designation 偏印 with the word 格, which here refers to a month-branch pattern. The heading below distinguishes the pattern itself from the individual transformational relation 偏印. A person may have 偏印 present in a chart without having 偏印格, because the pattern depends specifically on whether this relation occupies the month branch. The entry therefore begins with the basic definition, then reviews how two major classical sources treat the pattern, outlines the traditional conditions for its success and failure, locates the idea of 枭神夺食 within the larger discussion, and closes with a note on what this knowledge-base article does not provide.

偏印格与偏印不是同一件事

偏印 is one of the ten bazi transformational relations, or Ten Gods. It arises when an element in the heavenly stems or in the hidden stems of the earthly branches generates the day master and shares the same yin-yang polarity as the day master. If the generating element differs in polarity from the day master, it is called 正印. If it is the same polarity, it is called 偏印. Thus 正印 and 偏印 are distinguished by polarity alone, not by whether the relation is inherently positive or negative.

偏印格, by contrast, belongs to the structural system of 子平 pattern analysis, in which the pattern is taken from the month branch. The pattern is established when 偏印 sits in the month branch. In other words, the monthly qi determines the pattern, and only when that monthly position contains 偏印 does the chart fall under 偏印格. Having 偏印 elsewhere in the four pillars does not by itself create this pattern. The distinction matters because much traditional discussion of 偏印 as a relation can be mistaken for discussion of the pattern. The two are related, but they are not interchangeable.

两部书对这一格的不同立场

The two major sources named here differ in emphasis. In 《子平真诠》, the discussion of the 印绶 pattern treats the seal relation as fundamentally something that supports the day master. The text regards 正印 and 偏印 alike as belonging to the same favorable category. It does not make the polarity distinction a decisive marker of good or bad pattern quality. In its treatment, wealth and seal are not separated according to whether the seal is 正 or 偏. Instead, both enter the 印绶 pattern and are assessed together under one framework. This means that, within the 《子平真诠》 approach, 偏印格 is not automatically viewed as a damaged or inferior variant of the seal pattern. The text emphasizes the generative and protective function of the seal rather than the polarity distinction.

《三命通会》 gives a different emphasis in its discussion of the 食神 relation. There, 偏印 is called 倒食, a term that specifically refers to its capacity to restrain and damage 食神. The text records that whether this restraint becomes a disaster depends on the strength or thickness of 食神. If 食神 is strong, the harm may be limited. If 食神 is weak, the same relation may be more damaging. This does not mean that 《三命通会》 denies the existence of 偏印格. It means that, within its discussion of 食神, the text foregrounds the suppressive side of 偏印. The two books therefore represent two distinct interpretive angles: one treats 偏印 as a legitimate form of the seal pattern; the other, in a different context, treats it as 倒食 in relation to 食神.

旧论所列的成格条件

Traditional discussions list several conditions under which 偏印格 can be regarded as successfully formed. The most basic condition is positional: 偏印 must occupy the month branch. Without that, the pattern is not established under 子平 method.

In 《子平真诠》, the broader 印绶 discussion treats the seal as favorable because it generates and supports the day master. Both 正印 and 偏印 share in this function. The text also holds that wealth and seal should not be separated by the 正 or 偏 distinction when entering the same 印绶 pattern. This means that a 偏印格 chart can be evaluated within the same framework as a 正印格 chart, with the seal’s supportive role as the central consideration.

The text also addresses the four fierce gods, or 四凶神, and lists 枭神 among them. However, it notes a case in which 枭神 can still form a pattern: when 食神 carries 煞, or the killing relation, 枭神 may also form a pattern. This is a narrower condition, but it shows that even the fierce designation of 枭神 does not exclude the possibility of a valid pattern in certain configurations. The traditional logic here is not that 枭神 becomes harmless in general, but that within a specific combination its action may serve a structural purpose.

旧论所列的破格条件

The classical sources do not present 偏印格 as automatically broken, but they do describe circumstances under which the negative side of 偏印 dominates. The most prominent of these is the relation known as 枭神夺食. When 偏印 acts as 倒食 and overcomes 食神, the pattern can be damaged. 《三命通会》 explicitly records that the severity of this depends on the strength of 食神. If 食神 is substantial, the seizure of food does not necessarily become a calamity. If 食神 is thin or weak, the harm is more likely to materialize. Thus the breaking condition is not the mere presence of 偏印, but the imbalance between 偏印 and 食神.

In the 《子平真诠》 framework, the seal is not ordinarily treated as something to be attacked. Even when 偏印 is unfavorable, the traditional handling focuses on controlling it indirectly rather than directly striking it. Since the seal is ultimately a life-generating object, old discussions emphasize using wealth to restrain the seal or using companions and robbers to divide its force. The aim is not to destroy the seal, but to reduce its excess or redirect its pressure. This reflects a broader principle in traditional pattern analysis: even an unwanted seal retains its generative nature, and direct suppression is not the usual remedy.

枭神夺食在这一格中的位置

枭神夺食 is often associated with 偏印, but it occupies a specific place in the discussion of 偏印格. The term 枭神 is used in 《子平真诠》 as one of the four fierce gods. Yet the same text notes that when 食神 carries 煞,枭神 can still form a pattern. This means that the relation between 枭神 and 食神 is not a simple rule of prohibition. The outcome depends on the surrounding structure.

《三命通会》 treats 枭神夺食 primarily within its discussion of 食神. There, 偏印 is called 倒食 precisely because it can suppress 食神. The text’s concern is the degree of harm: a strong 食神 can withstand the seizure, while a weak one cannot. This makes 枭神夺食 a conditional problem rather than an absolute defect of every 偏印格. A chart may contain 偏印格 without having the specific 枭神夺食 configuration. Conversely, a chart with 枭神夺食 may not necessarily have 偏印格, since the pattern depends on the month branch and the damaging relation may arise elsewhere.

The entry therefore keeps 枭神夺食 distinct from the general definition of 偏印格. It is one of the traditional danger conditions associated with 偏印, but it is not identical with the pattern itself.

This entry lists only the classification result for 偏印格. It states what the classical sources say about the pattern, its formation, its failure conditions, and the role of 枭神夺食. It does not explain the method by which a given chart is judged to belong to 偏印格. The procedures for determining whether 偏印 occupies the month branch, how hidden stems are weighted, and how conflicting indicators are resolved are outside the scope of this article. The article also does not provide interpretive advice for individual charts, does not rank 偏印格 against other patterns, and does not promise outcomes for people whose charts contain this pattern. It is limited to recording the traditional classification and the principal classical statements concerning it.
