Is the Bazi Chart Accurate? Verification vs. Interpretation

The question of whether a bazi chart is accurate has to be separated from the question of whether an interpretation fits a person’s experience. Accuracy can be checked character by character; interpretive fit cannot be checked in the same way. A chart either contains the correct 干支 columns, hidden stems, five-element labels, and ten-god assignments, or it does not. Whether a given reading of that chart feels apt is a different matter, and no amount of checking the chart itself settles that second question.

A bazi chart is made of fixed building blocks that can be verified against the input. The four pillars are the year, month, day, and hour pillars. Each pillar consists of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. From these eight characters, the chart also shows five-element labels for each stem and branch, hidden stems in each earthly branch, and ten-god labels derived from the day master. All of these markings follow fixed rules. If the source calendar data is correct, then the resulting chart is either correct or incorrect in a checkable way. The chart can therefore be audited line by line. The interpretation of the chart is not like this. An interpretation may be more or less plausible, more or less useful, or more or less acceptable to the person asking the question, but it cannot be checked character by character in the way the chart itself can.
四柱之外还要核对的三项
When checking a chart, the four pillars are only the beginning. Beyond the eight characters themselves, three further parts need to be verified. First, the five-element label attached to each stem and branch must match that stem or branch. For example, 甲 is wood and 子 is water; if a chart labels 甲 as fire or 子 as metal, that is a direct error. Second, the hidden stems listed under each earthly branch must match the fixed correspondence. 子 hides 癸,午 hides 丁 and 己, and so on. If the hidden stems under a branch differ from the standard table, the chart is wrong. Third, the ten-god labels must be derived with the day master as the reference point. The day stem is the self; every other stem and hidden stem is then classified in relation to it according to the five-element cycle and the polarity of yin and yang. If the ten-god labels do not follow from the day stem, the chart contains an error.

When two charts made from the same or similar input do not agree, the disagreement should be examined in a set order. Start with the year pillar. The year boundary is the beginning of spring, 立春, not the lunar new year and not January 1. A birth date before or after 立春 falls into different year pillars. Next, look at the month pillar. The month boundary is the exact moment of the solar term, the 交节 time, not the first day of a lunar month. A birth a few minutes before or after a solar term can change the month branch. Then look at the day pillar. The main variable here is the treatment of the 子 hour. Some systems start the day at 23:00, others at midnight, and this changes the day pillar for births in that hour. Finally, look at the hour pillar. The hour is divided into two-hour segments, but the boundary between segments and the treatment of clock time can differ. If two charts differ, checking in this order usually identifies where the divergence entered.

Not every difference between two charts is an error. Some differences come from different conventions, and these conventions can be stated plainly. One is the distinction between early 子 hour and late 子 hour. Births between 23:00 and 00:00 may be assigned to the late 子 hour of the current day or the early 子 hour of the next day, depending on the convention. Another is whether true solar time correction is applied. A chart based on clock time and a chart based on solar time can shift the hour pillar, especially for locations far from the standard meridian. A third is mixed use of lunar and Gregorian input. If one chart is calculated from a lunar date converted to a Gregorian date and another from the Gregorian date directly, the resulting pillars can differ even though the same person is being described. These are not computational mistakes. They are differences in starting assumptions, and they can be explained in one sentence and reproduced consistently on other dates.

The term 命盘 and its traditional form 命盤 are the same term. In search tools, 命盤 and 命盘 show the same volume, and 命盤查詢 and 命盘查询 also show the same volume. This group belongs to the case where simplified and traditional forms are not treated separately. The two written forms do not need separate entries. The traditional form 命盤 is common in Taiwan and Hong Kong, but in reference material the simplified and traditional forms refer to the same concept and the same checking method. A chart in traditional Chinese output is not a different system; the characters are written differently, but the underlying pillars, hidden stems, five elements, and ten gods are the same. The same verification steps apply to both written forms. The site uses the simplified form in its main interface, but the term 命盤 in traditional Chinese is understood as the same object.
When the same input is run through the site’s engine repeatedly, it produces the same chart each time. That chart can then be checked item by item. The year pillar can be checked against 立春, the month pillar against the solar term time, the day pillar against the chosen 子时 convention, and the hour pillar against the clock time. The five-element labels, hidden stems, and ten-god labels can all be checked against the fixed rules. If any item does not match, that is a computational error. If the difference is instead due to early or late 子 hour, true solar time correction, or mixed lunar and Gregorian input, then it is a difference of convention, not a mistake. The distinction matters because a difference of convention can be explained clearly and will reappear consistently on other dates, while a computational error cannot be explained in that way and will not behave consistently. The site’s engine does not apply true solar time correction. There is no longitude field in the input, and the hour pillar is calculated from the birth location’s clock time.
