Sexagenary Year Pillar: Calculation and Principles

The term 六十年柱 refers to the sixty possible year-pillar combinations formed by pairing the ten heavenly stems with the twelve earthly branches. In a bazi chart the year pillar is the first of the four pillars, and its stem-branch pair cycles through the full sexagenary sequence across sixty years. Because the year pillar is the only pillar that can be derived from year information alone, it often becomes the entry point for reading a chart, but it is also one of the most commonly misread parts of the system when reduced to zodiac-year shorthand.
年柱与生肖之间
A widely repeated method for finding the year branch says to subtract four from the Gregorian year, divide by twelve, and take the remainder. That procedure gives only the earthly branch. It does not by itself produce the heavenly stem; the stem must be obtained by taking the same year-minus-four value, dividing by ten, and taking a separate remainder. The subtraction of four is a shared preparatory step for both the stem and the branch, not an operation that applies only to the branch. Treating the formula as a zodiac-only shortcut loses exactly the half of the year pillar that the heavenly stem carries.
The engine used on this site anchors the sexagenary cycle at 1984 as a 甲子 year. Subtracting four from 1984 gives 1980. Dividing 1980 by ten leaves a remainder of zero, which corresponds to 甲, the first heavenly stem. Dividing the same 1980 by twelve also leaves zero, which corresponds to 子, the first earthly branch. The two remainders are read against their own cycles and combine to produce 甲子. Any other year can be processed the same way, but the result is a stem-branch pair, not merely a branch.
立春交节为年柱分界
The input to the year-pillar formula must be a bazi year, not a civil calendar year. In bazi practice the year pillar changes at 立春, the beginning of the solar term that starts the first month of the year. A person born before 立春 is still assigned to the previous year pillar even if the Gregorian date has already moved into January and even if the lunar new year has already passed. When the birth occurs before the 立春 boundary, the year used for the calculation must be reduced by one. Using the civil year directly will place the person in the wrong stem-branch pair.
This creates a recurring mismatch with popular zodiac usage. Zodiac signs change at the lunar new year, while the year pillar changes at 立春. The two boundaries usually differ by about half a month. A birth that falls after 立春 but before the lunar new year will produce one animal sign under the zodiac convention and a different year branch under the year-pillar convention. The disagreement is not an error in the formula; it follows from the fact that the two systems are measuring different years. The year pillar belongs to the solar-term calendar, while the zodiac year belongs to the lunar calendar.
六十年柱的干支循环
The sixty year-pillar combinations run in a fixed order from 甲子 through 癸亥. The heavenly stem advances by one and the earthly branch advances by one at each step. Because ten and twelve share a least common multiple of sixty, the same stem-branch pair returns after exactly sixty years. A person born sixty years after someone else will share the same year pillar, although the month, day, and hour pillars will normally differ.
The year pillar is the only pillar that can be derived from year information alone. The month pillar additionally requires the solar term position, because the month stem is generated from the year stem through the 五虎遁 method and the month branch is fixed by the solar term. The day pillar requires the specific date, and the hour pillar requires the hour of birth. This asymmetry is one reason the year pillar receives so much attention in introductory material: it is the easiest pillar to compute from minimal data, but it is also the easiest to over-interpret because it is only one of four columns.
年柱在祖辈与早年取象里的用法
Within a chart, the year pillar governs the environment of early life, and the year branch is treated as the palace of the ancestors. The year pillar is read as the inherited setting into which a person is born: family background, early conditions, and the general atmosphere of childhood. It is not a statement about the person’s entire life course, nor is it a substitute for the day master.
Two people born in the same 甲子 year may nevertheless have very different charts. The month order, the day master, and the hour pillar all interact with the year pillar in ways that can change the theme completely. The same year branch may support one chart and oppose another. Because the ten gods are derived with the day stem as the center, the same heavenly stem will be labeled differently for a 甲 day master than for a 庚 day master. A year stem of 壬, for example, is the direct resource star for a 甲 day master but the eating-god star for a 庚 day master. The year pillar therefore cannot be read in isolation, and the zodiac animal cannot stand in for the day master.
过度生肖化的读法问题
Reducing the year pillar to a zodiac sign creates a reading problem because it removes the heavenly stem, ignores the day master, and treats the year branch as if it were the whole chart. The formula itself shows how much is lost: the branch is only the remainder after dividing by twelve; the stem is the remainder after dividing by ten. A person born in a 壬子 year is not simply born in a Rat year. 壬子 is the forty-ninth position in the sexagenary cycle; its nayin is 桑柘木, and 子 contains only the hidden stem 癸. None of these details survive when the year is collapsed into the animal label.
The year pillar also has a narrower boundary than the zodiac year. The four pillars each have their own change points, and those boundaries do not move together. 立春 changes only the year pillar. A solar term changes only the month pillar. The 23:00 hour boundary changes only the day pillar and the hour pillar. On a boundary day, usually only one pillar needs to be rechecked; the other pillars remain untouched. This means that even when a birth falls near the lunar new year, the year pillar may already have changed while the month pillar has not, or the reverse. The zodiac convention does not track these distinctions.
Because the month stem is generated from the year stem through the 五虎遁 method, an error in the year pillar will also produce an error in the month pillar. If the year stem is wrong, the month stem will be wrong as well, since the month stem is derived from the year stem. When checking an existing chart, the first verification step should therefore be the year pillar. If the year pillar is correct, the month pillar can be checked next. If the year pillar is wrong, the month pillar cannot be trusted until the year pillar is corrected.
The year pillar is best treated as one column among four: important for early environment and ancestral background, useful for confirming the stem-branch frame of the chart, but not a complete reading on its own.
